6 lug to 5 lug changeover list
Can anybody confirm the req'd parts to change from 6lug to 5lug?
I have for sure lower a arm spindle, brakes, dust shields, on out rear axles and drums changing over my 70 GMC, have all the parts, but have to have them shipped 2600 miles, so trying to only ship the req'd stuff. Are the backing plates on rear the same? What about tie rods, I assume they are the same. Anything I am missing? Jeff

all you need are shafts and drums for rear, i have all for 30 plus mail, from running truck if interested anytime soon.
front you will be best off to find a complete suspension from a 71-87 truck. preferably 79 at latest. is direct swap over, the brake lines run on front side of cradle on 71pup and run behind it on pre-71 trucks, have to re-route all lines and hoses for later model and get brake proportion valve off a 71-up truck, and correct pitman arm and i prefer 73-up hoses because they are lots longr and pass through frame rail holes instead of having to worry about having to fab brackets to mount them in on the 64-70 cradles, calipers differ from 72 to 73 and so do hose ends,. good luck |

I agree with ty1295, you should get the entire front cradle from a 73-87 chevy/GMC. I did the changeover on my 64 and it was relatively simple. Got the front entire front suspension from a rear wrecked vehicle. Cut the frame just behind the shock mounts and it bolted right up with little effort. On your 70 GMC, you will have to "egg out" the lower side frame mount holes as the 73-87 has a narrower bolt pattern. If you use from 80-87, you will have to drill another hole in the top side mount holes also. Everything else is a bolt on. Changing the entire cradle is the way to go. Makes it much easier to order parts and you don't have to mix and match parts. If you do the entire swap, be sure to get all the front brake lines and bolts from the donor vehicle. Best way is to have them cut the frame. Good luck whatever you try.
