While investigating the gas odor coming from my truck, I found that the plastic rock-shield had collected a ton of water and sand. That ended up rusing out the brackets that hold the tank as well as the rear strap. The bottom of the tank is all rusty and wet with gas, it obviously has a couple pinhole leaks. Do I need to take the bed off to replace the tank and support brackets, or can I do it from underneath? Also, does anyonw know where I can find the brackets for sale? I tried looking in the Chevy Duty and LMC catalogs but couldn't find them. Are the gas fumes affecting my vision?

EDIT: I found this picture on some guy's web site. This is one of the brackets that I'm looking for.

Yes, you can remove everything from under the truck. The cheapest bet would be to find a pair at a junk-yard. If you want new you may try the dealer.

where is beantown im in oklahoma i have two sets i don't know if there is any diffrents between truck, burb, blazer, etc. but they are relatively easy to find in the yards

Beantown is Boston. I'll have to get to the salvage yards to look for some brackets. The thing I worry about around here is how rusted out everything gets. Rust free parts are tough to find, so I'm always tempted to get brand-new replacement parts when I can afford them.

Burbs and Blazers have completely different tanks in a completely different spot...you will need to look at pickups only.

I HAD what you were looking for, off my Arizona truck, but sold them a few months ago for $45...brackets straps, shield, and even the bolts.

Hey I just did the same thing on my 84 gmc lwb 6.2l . I got the tank for 105.00 and the tank straps and bracket like in the picture you have for 25.00 for both the short bracket and long bracket better known as front and back . The tank was new .Our junk yards here keep a stock of new tanks in stock .It seems they cant keep up with demand in the yard .So they found a supplier to get what we all need. A junk yard in other part said 55.00 for straps and bracket each.
I will have pictures soon I dont have a digital but i do have access to a scanner at work .

Turbo85gmc i havent really been out of oklahoma in my intire life except for a family vacation as a kid so it dont register about the rust factor i dont blame you for buying new when you can i pretty much do it here as well when i can best of luck.

bigblock73 thank for the info i have really learned a lot about these style trucks burbs included sence i have been on this sit until next question or descussion be safe.

Sheer luck, but I heard about a local guy parting out a truck with nearly-new tank/straps/brackets. I'm going to check them out tonight. If that doesn't pan out, guess I'll be heading to the junkyard! Thanks for all the feedback!

I was able to pick up a 1-year old tank with OEM brackets & straps last night. It was complete from gas cap to sender, everything I needed! Guess you know what I'll be doing on the truck this weekend!
