Timing
I know this may be kinda if a dumb question but, How can you chack your timing with a timing light if there is no marker on you Harmonic balancer?
How can I figure out where to mark the balancer to tell me when #1 cylinder is firing?

Have you checked the balancer for a groove? It could be covered in grease. What year is the block, is the balancer new?
Do you have a Piston stop that uses a sparkplug adapter to install into the cylinder head?

I would degrease it then mark it. Bump the balancer groove to the bottom so its easier to clean and mark. You can use chalk you can get an paint pen you can mask the grove off on both sides leaving a very small slit and spray paint it or brush. White, Silver, Neon yellow. Really depends on what color it is.
Probably wouldn't hurt to clean up the timing tab either. Long screwdriver and a shop rag will get it most times.
