Q-Jet to Performer Carb (1406?)
I am thinking about switching carbs.
I have an Edelbrock Q-Jet 1904 now. I planned to get it rebuilt, because I don't want to try it myself, and the lowest price I got from someone I think I can trust is $150.00. So I figure maybe I should switch to the Edelbrock Performer 1406. Is the 1406 the one I should be getting if I do make the switch? Its either the Edelbrock Q-Jet rebuilt or an Edelbrock Performer series, not interested in others. I have the Edelbrock 3701 intake. Is this also a sq. bore pattern? Will I notice a performance difference between the q-jet and the Edelbrock performer? Anyone make the switch and noticed less power? Are these performer carbs easy to rebuilt and adjust? I want something easier to adjust and easy to rebuild. Will I be able to hook up all my vacuum lines for emissions? Anyone in Phoenix running this carb and have trouble with emissions? I heard before that you may fail for having this carb on a truck that came with a q-jet. Edelbrock's website says this carb is not legal for pollution controlled vehicles. Anything I should expect (different parts, etc.) if I do make the switch? My engine is the standard crate 350 (not performance).

I am pretty sure gchemist has one of those on his truck. He might be able to make a comparison for you. I have not used one, but I have never heard anything but good stuff about them. They go for about $270 around here in the parts stores, so the prce is really tempting.
Let me know if you want to sell your 1904. Slonaker |

I think I will probably get the q-jet rebuilt.
I don't want any issues when emissions rolls around.

I decided to stick with the Q-Jet, its been good to me and I am
happy with the performance of the truck (for what I have). I took it down to get rebuilt, should get it back today. Hopefully have it back in the truck and running by Saturday.

I have some friends that have an A/C and mechanic shop in gilbert, and they run the Edel 1406 on sbc they swear by them. I stop by there every day after work and BS around. These guys give me alot of cr@p becouse they think a I'm Holley only kinda guy. Well I'm not, I just know holleys better than I know the other carbs. I have run AVS, AFB, Thermoquads, Q-jets. I have all ways come back to Holley's. 2 months ago I rebuilt an Edelbrock Q jet for my brother in laws room mate, It working perfectly and it's on a 350 sb, and I charged him $35.00. I havent heard any complaints. As for Holleys I run a 750 vac secondary 268H comp cam 10.5 to 1 compression and pass emissions with a .128 on HC, Max allowed is .400 on HC and my truck was shaking the building at the emissions station. The choke setups on the 1406 are horrible. Nothing like your trusty Q jet. Then you are forking out money on a carb that's really no better than what you have right now. I bought a 1406 for my 84 C 20 everyone said they go right out of the box, Well the go bang bang thru the carb cause it's way to lean so right off the batt. I need a $100.00 jet kit to get my $450.00 carb to run right. See why I hate them I have over 550.00 into a carb that needs th echoke to be readjusted every couple of weeks because the weather tepm bounces 15c. My dad and I both bought them at the same time. Both of us wish we would have left them on the shelf.
JUST M.O Sounds like you made a good decision. All prices acre CDN.

I paid $135 to have it rebuilt. Most of it was labor.
The guy I had rebuild it seems like a fair man who has been doing it for awhile. His typical rebuild cost for a q-jet is $155, but I already had a new float, and most parts were OK so he reused them and took it off the $155. The plugs on the bottom that can leak are not sealed up any different on these Edelbrocks then the older Rochesters. He sealed them up with epoxy or what ever they use. He also drilled out the shaft holes and installed oil impregnated bushings. He says when a carb is in good shape like this one its good to have it done. Keeps everything in line better and can make the carb last awhile longer. He also said the accelerator pump in mine wasn't working as well as it should. He said the fuel blend we get here eats up these stock type ones. He installed "the blue one" which is much better and should easily last 3-4 years without problems. Don't have it on the truck yet, but I feel confident in his work, Ill let you guys know how everything is doing once I get the truck on the road, hopefully by Saturday.

1406
I've don this with a stock Q-Jet to the 1406.
Will I notice a performance difference between the q-jet and the Edelbrock performer? - Yes! Sounds better and Performs better - comparatively. BUT, Check the jetting charts for your altitude. They're benched for sea level and I'm at 4800 feet. You can get the approprate jets for about $9 bucks from Summit. Anyone make the switch and noticed less power? - I got more power and better throttle. Be carefule with linkage though. Are these performer carbs easy to rebuilt and adjust? - Haven't needed rebuild yet. I want something easier to adjust and easy to rebuild. Will I be able to hook up all my vacuum lines for emissions? - No problems. Above & below throttle connections and booster. I heard before that you may fail for having this carb on a truck that came with a q-jet. - Not sure there. No probs here in Reno. Edelbrock's website says this carb is not legal for pollution controlled vehicles. Anything I should expect (different parts, etc.) if I do make the switch? My engine is the standard crate 350 (not performance). - Same engine as me. You may need to go with the EGR model (1407??) Anyway, I dig my Edelbrock. And it looks great! Not that that helps with performance or emissions. -Dave

1407 Is a 750 Edelbrock, and the funny thing with those is they dump gas and the basic 1406 is pretty lean for most engines outta the box. Side note the manual operated choke models run a tad richer than the electronic choke ones.
1406 isn't that bad and they can be messed with to get right, just like any other carb. But I just like the Quadrajet myself, I even though I have a 1406 on mine right now. I need to fix the quadrajet to get the 4 barrel working right. Sucks on the highway with 2 small barrels and trying to pass someone.
