66 4x4

Hello all: :
New here, been on the old trucks site for a while. I've got a 54 GMC at home that i'll be starting to restore soon, but the previous owner installed ... a mustang 289 and drive train.., sacrilage I know. I'm going to restore it to GM power, and I want to go back to a straight 6. Ive got a chance to get a 66, 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 292 in it for a good price, and before I drive 4 hours to look at it, I'd like to know, confused: were the transmission and transfer case separate back then , or had they been bolted together already .

Thanks

Rodger
