disk brake kits
Most of the disk brake kits for 6 lug always say may not work with factory wheels. I dont know if I have factory wheels or not I think they are 15x8 rallyes. Anyway what is the deal?

Re: disk brake kits
If they are rally wheels, they aren't original.

Re: disk brake kits
So I should be ok with the kits that say they will not fit factory drum wheels?
What rims came on our trucks?

Re: disk brake kits
Those wheels should work fine, they woulda come off a 4X4 73 - 87 truck or blazer. Our trucks came with plain old steel wheels

Re: disk brake kits
Most likely they would need at least a 1" spacer as I did on my friends 66. His oem wheels are built a little different and the 72 caliper actually touched the rim without the spacer.

Re: disk brake kits
The 6 lug Rally wheels should clear the brake calipers. They only came on later trucks, which had discs from the factory.
Some stock 6 lug wheels were constructed queer and had interference with disc brake calipers when the trucks were converted to discs. That was only wheels off stock early drum brake trucks.

Re: disk brake kits
i took the control arms (complete with everything) off an 81 chevy 3/4 ton (i have a 3/4 ton) and i found out in a bad way that 15" wheels dont fit over the calipers... so i had to search around the town like mad to find 2 16" 8 bolt wheels with tires on em for less than 50 bucks- finally found some too... then i got to test drive it back to reno from placerville- wow disks are a huge upgrade!!! that's prolly why they say may not work with factory wheels- 15's dont fit...

Re: disk brake kits
I put stock truck wheels off my 70 onto the front of my 72 blazer 4wd and the wheel caught on the caliper. Put a rally on there and had no more troubles.

Re: disk brake kits
I have got 15x8 corvette style rally's will they work with this kit or will I have interference? Is there a difference between the truck style and corvette syle rallys, other than the looks? Randy

Re: disk brake kits
The problem was with some OEM 6 lug wheels that were stock on these trucks with drum brakes. Aftermarket wheels like the Vette rallys don't have the problem or even the OEM 4x4 6 lug rally wheels.

Re: disk brake kits
part two, what all do ,I have to change out, some kits have alot of stuff some a little? I have a booster and MC on there already the proportioning valve I Know has to be changed to a disk drum. But what about the booster and MC? Then under the truck I know spindle calipers hoses and such but some of the kits come with ball joints and tie rods and such. I dont mind spending on brakeing but dont want to flush money either.
Thanks

Re: disk brake kits
I got the 6 lug conversion kit from GMCPauls. It's like $470. You will need to get a MC for an 71 or newer (resevior is larger) and the disc/drum proportioning valve. The kit that GMCPaul sells uses the original tie rod ends off your '68. The tie rod ends and spindles on the 71 and up I believe are a different diameter.
