Question Wrecker, kind of

My old man just gave me the "wrecker". 1969 K20 hugger orange, no air, 4 speed and steep gear ratios, my guess is 4.56. It was the shop truck at his GM dealership, i learned to drive in this thing. Came with the dealership in 76 when he bought it. Well, it's seen better days and a while ago he said "take that old thing to the junkyard" and of course i wouldn't do it! Lots of good stuff still there. not the cab or box or engine (low compression), it's got a cool old hand crank wrecker boom on it, HEI dist i put in. Axles are all there, the cap on the RF hub is gone, trans works but is kinda tricky to shift. Lot's of misc. stuff still usable. I'm going to part it out, could anyone use anything off this thing? Im just testing the waters, taking requests because it's burried in the snow bank that the snow plow guys weren't supposed to make on our back lot. Let me know if anyone needs anything.

Re: Wrecker, kind of

Well guys i trudged through the now and snapped some photos. There is no way this thing is going anywhere till spring without a front end loader's help. I should've really went and looked at it before i posted on the board, sorry. The plow guy really pisses me off sometimes, he also burried my car dolly. I really don't want to sell the whole thing.....I want 500 for the boom alone. Dad was offered that a few years ago and he didn't want to sell it, truck ran then tho. I also would kinda like to keep it around here just in case i need something when i'm building up my next 72. If i don't get what i want for the boom i'll keep it and put it on something else.

Looks like it may have the maroon interior judging by the seat. Let me know what parts are still good in that color. Thanks, Eric

Re: Wrecker, kind of

Wow, $500 for a manual crank boom. I have a perfectly operating electrical boom on my 67, which I am going to strip down for usable parts this spring. I wonder how much that would go for. I already had somebody look at the truck and asked about selling the boom separately.

My wrecker looks like the same set-up Chrome8. Mine was a C-20 custom camper which was converted to a wrecker 30 years ago.

Re: Wrecker, kind of

Hey man, i was serious about the figure. We had an offer a few years ago on the boom 500 large. No BS. My dad was still in his "i love the wrecker stage" and wouldn't have taken 1000. The guy bought one since.

Re: Wrecker, kind of

It's a shame he wasn't still interested. That would be good pocket change to have before Christmas.
I wonder how easy (or difficult) it would be to sell it. When I was selling the truck awhile ago a guy was looking at the truck because he was interested in buying it. He decided he did not want the truck but asked about the boom by itself, but I didn't want to part it out at the time. Is there a market out there for these old booms? I thought that they were obsolete. At least in CT they are, I don't believe that it is legal to tow a car that way anymore. That's why the guy that I bought it off of parked it a few years ago, because he said that he was not able to tow cars that way anymore.
I was actually considering selling it to him though but I didn't know how to price it. I was thinking about parting with it for like $300 but I thought that I might be asking too much so I told him I wasn't selling it.
I suppose there is a market for them if you can find a buyer.

I think there are people looking for these booms still. I know they won't tow a newer car because of the way they attach to the car. The new stuff has lower plastic airdams and molded bumpers. I know the guy that wanted ours was just hauling demo derby cars around. Modern towing is flat bed or wheel lift only. It would be great for someone towing old stuff around alot. I guess i'm just making it available here. I'll look at offers, as will anyone, we can only say no, that's the worst that can happen.

Shelby, i'll look in the morning and let you know on the PB. I'm not sure. last time i drove it i had to pump em up so much to stop that i couldn't tell if it was power assisted.....I'll let you know. My timing on this post sucks, i didn't realize it was as buried as it is before i posted. But i will check that in the morning.

THERE IS A 72 K-20 FWD WREAKER WITH A BLOWN MOTOR, THATS BEEN SITTING BEHIND A CAR LOT FOR 10 YEARS, NOT TO FAR FROM MY HOUSE. IT'S MISSING ONE REAR AXEL SHAFT, BUT EVERYTHING ELSE IS THERE. I CAN PICK IT UP FOR $350. I'VE BEEN WANTING TO SWAP BOOMS WITH MY TOWTRUCK, BECAUSE IT IS EXTENDABLE BY ABOUT 6 FEET. IT HAS A SM465 TRANNY, NP205 TRANSFER CASE, & A PTO DRIVEN WINCH.THE GLOVEBOX ACC. SHEET SAYS IT CAME WITH TOWHOOKS, BUT THEY ARE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. I'VE BEEN TOYING WITH THE IDEA OF PARTING IT OUT. I DIDN'T FIGURE THE PARTS WERE WORTH ALL THAT MUCH, BUT IF THAT HAND CRANK WINCH IS WORTH $500, THAN THAT PTO WINCH MUST BE WORTH THOUSANDS. ANYBODY INTERESTED IN THIS TRUCK FOR $350 AFTER I SWAP BOOMS? IT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRAILORED FROM CARSON CITY NEVADA. JOHN

It's worth whatever somebody is willing to pay. If they want it badly enough they may pay $1000, so and and so forth. It's all a matter of the right person seeing it at the right time. Unless you have somebody lined up for it you're probably going to be holding on to that thing until the spring. After all that snow melts, roll it out front, throw a sign on her, and maybe somebody will come knocking. After you take the parts that you will need of course.

I think I'm going to take your advice! I don't really want to dig the thing out, I would for the right price of course.

Oh yeah, I still have it Lou. I got it running and she still runs strong. Unfortunately I've decided to stick with the shorty that you saw in my garage. I'm going to pull the motor and tranny out of the wrecker, and also use the front clip for the shorty. I also need to take some patch panels off of her too. She will make a good donor. I anticipate doing this in the early spring, let her rest in peace, or should I say pieces
