I've been around here for a bit, and decided I ought to say my formal 'hello' to everybody...

I've got a 1977 GMC C15 1/2 ton 305. Just turned 400,000 miles (3rd engine, 3rd tranny, 2nd diff). The only original thing left on it is the frame.

I just replaced the cab and box; got a hood, tailgate, rad support, inner fenders coming. The cab is an '86 and I haven't got the '77 front end mated to it yet, though it is sort of bolted on.

She runs only on propane, which is 1/2 the price of gasoline here.

The new body is all from the southern US (rust free, hard to find here in Toronto with all the salt they dump on the roads). After I pulled the old cab & box, I had to weld the cab mounts, and I added a few patches where needed. I cleaned the frame down to bare metal, primed it with etching primer, and painted with acrylic enamel... because I finished it off with a nice coat of rubberized chip guard. Same finishing on the bottom of the box and cab.

That's about where I am now, except things are together enough that she drives. The guys at the shop where I was working (with a bit of help from them), never thought she'd ever move again!

PS. Yesterday I took her out around the neighbourhood and she ran just perfectly (except for the rattles where stuff isn't bolted on yet). I got some strange looks - no hood, no grille, no box (only the floor is on), and I had my taillights bungeed to the floor at the back. Good enough that I might argue my way out of a ticket, like the lights / signals all work, seatbelt works, etc.

Welcome to the board from Fenelon Falls, ON. We have a '79 on straight LPG. It is a great truck. Plus we have about 7 other trucks on LPG, 3 being dual fuel as well (our family owns a propane company).

Are you right downtown TO?

Thanks for all the hellos! Pretty active board here.

Right now I'm at a standstill re: working any more on the truck, it's too darn cold! (I have no heat). I did start off working in a body shop, but they closed down after the fire (see pics in post #14 in "General Truck Forums", "Shop Safety" or http://makeashorterlink.com/?S44365BAC ). So I'm out on the street, well, on my driveway!

68gmcdually: I'm in Mississauga, at Hwy 403 and Hwy 401. What's propane worth in Fenelon Falls these days? It's around 52 cents/L here now. Do you know why it's cheaper in the city? Shipping costs?

(Aside to: Curbstone mechanic... It's not a Jimmy, it's a long box with a cap).

I just got a truck converted to LPG down there, Hwy 401 and Martin Grove Rd. area. Propane is cheaper down in the city usually since there are alot of taxis still running on it as well as the airport limos. Trying to buy auto fuel in our neck of the woods is difficult. BTW; here is a pic of our little gurl, we have owned it for along time and we just can't bear to part with it, we only run it on weekends in the summer filling small tanks (my motor fuel tank is in the same spot of yours too)

I can see the tank fillers down there at the side. She's a neat truck!

There was one night I thought I'd be sleeping in my truck... I was coming down the 400 and I realized I wasn't going to make Barrie. So my brother and I are parked on this off ramp in the middle of nowhere, phoning around, and everything's closed, when a guy pulls up in his truck. He's a licensed propane mechanic, and says he has a leftover BBQ cheater tank & hose at his place, 5 minutes away. He gave it to me and it was enough to get me to Barrie (open 24 hours).

Not knowing anything at the time, I only offered him $20 for it and he accepted it. I should have given him more.

So tell me about how hard it is to get propane... and I drove to Milwaukee, and back with my 'new' cab and box, on propane only!
