Steering box Swap?
I have a 71 3/4 and was wondering if the steering box from a 84 1 ton Chevy will fit with little or no mod. Any information would be great.

That isn't that big of deal either since I have a brand new gen 3 power steering pump I am sure I will need all new hoses anyway. My biggest concern is fitment to bolt it up.

It should be straight bolt in.
Just unscrew the fitting out of the later p/s pump and screw it into your earlier pump to make the newer hoses work. It takes a 1 inch socket or wrench.

If its a manual you are replacing with a power box may have to dent the frame

It is power to power but my old power box the shaft inside is bent. Thank you all for the information.

I'm running a 91 suburban power box on my 67 in place of manual, I had to trim a little bit of the radiator support bracket for it to fit.

I've got a 81 1-ton with hydra boost that I just pulled the 454/TH400 from for my 67. Will the box from the 81 work for my 67? I understand I'll have to dimple the frame. I'm guessing since I'm not using the hydra-boost that I will need a different pump though?? I'm thinking of running a march serpentine conversion kit with a 87 sunbird pump.

--- Why not use the hydroboost--will give you more clearance from the valve covers on the BBC.. use the 81 pump either way --if it has the extra return port -- just cap it-- it is not under pressure. If you mix and match instead of using all the 81 parts--you may have metric 0-ring and IFF fittings --- I know my 82 hydroboost is metric 0-ring and my 76 steering gear is IFF. The one ton steering gear may differ from a 1/2 ton.

I took it of for a GM belt drive and can't get rid of it.

Really?!?! So you were really unhappy with it huh? Bummer, I thought I just about had this figured out. Was it just finish that you didn't like or did it not perform as you expected or what? I personally think the factory setup...if its like the one that was on my 98...looks like junk. Just the big hunk of aluminum that makes up the majority of mounting bracket doesn't look as pretty and shiny as the march setup. But ofcourse if it doesn't work well, than pretty and shiny don't get you to far huh? And to think I really wanted a Billet specialties tru-trac system and was going "cheap" for now with this march setup.
Thanks for the heads up, looks like I'll have to keep looking, or run the factory v-belt stuff I have on it now.

It looks cheesy when you get up close to it. The belts don't stay tight and what ever they coat it with scratches like crazy. Maybe some like it but I don't. I though for the money it should have been a little more substantial.
And to top it all off its not a really serpintine belt drive its a multi V the last idler on the ac side makes it a serpintine I guess. But if you don't have A/C its a multi V. |
