Question Project truck price range??????

About what is the price range for project trucks 67-87?Decent condition just rough around the edges( rocker rust dings needing paint etc) .2 Wheel drive no engine or blown engine. Also how big of a can of worms would I be opening by trying to swap a 6.5(6.2 intake etc no turbo)diesel into one of these.
Thanks
Shane

Re: Project truck price range??????

67-72 is slightly higher, and of course a shortbed is higher of course because they look better, as for the diesel, somebody has prolly done it before, it all depends on what you want

Re: Project truck price range??????

The 6.5L with no turbo using the 6.2L Intake and exhaust should drop right in.. Take a look around, there was a 6.5L N/A Engine available as a goodwrench crate replacement for the 6.2L I have seen a few.

As for How much for a project truck.. Kind of depends on what it needs, and what kind of shape it's in. Long bed 2WD will be cheaper, short beds and 4x4 will cost more.

I just bought a 79 project truck with an Olds 5.7L Diesel (and hydro boost brakes) for $250. Granted I paid $400 to have it hauled 500 miles to me but, it was worth it, the engine runs great truck drives straight, and best of all aside from the bed floor being rusted through from having a plastic bed liner and the bottoms of the doors. The body is rock solid. The underside is rust free and still has shiney paint.

Has Collision Damage on the left front, the paint is shot and it has surface rust in spots but it's solid.

I think it's well worth $650 considering I paid $800 for my 85 and it needed a tranny. Had no A/C and a Trashed interior. Just about every body panel except the doors and bed floor have rust perforation.. Guess where those are going..

Re: Project truck price range??????

I recently bought an 80K mile 86 1/2 ton short wide GMC with V6, AC, PS, and PB for $1575. The body is mostly rust free, has rust popping on cab corner and on outside of doors. I drove it home from Louisville to Indy and have been driving it daily since.

My advice is don't start too low on the food chain in an effort to save $. I bought this cheaper than I could have repaired the rust on my 84 short stepper.

I am guessing this truck went cheap because of the V6, single headlights, and cheap interior.

Yup something like that or one of those insane $100 deals is sort of what I had in mind.

Re: Project truck price range??????

Well, I was looking for a pre-1975 truck because I didn't want to deal with emissions. I couldn't find much that wasn't a total rust bucket. Most of the ones I came across were about $5K + for decent, and $3k or lower was a REAL project.

I found my ‘74 with a 3504V, 4WD, 4-spd, Long-bed fleetside with tow hitch installed and in pretty good shape. Has some rust in the rockers and around the rear wheels to be expected, but other than surface rust on the chassis and a greasy engine compartment it ran fine.

A day at the car wash (my local one DOES allow engine washing) got all the grease off to reveal a pretty clean engine compartment. Rebuilt the carb myself for a $19 kit, and $50 to have the clutch and throw out bearing adjusted (it was making some noise but shifted fine) and the thing runs awesome. All the rest of the issues are purely aesthetic and will be fixed slowly as money allows.

Paid $2500.

Re: Project truck price range??????

well monday i could have bought a pretty straight 74 longbed chevy with a buick 350 and turbo 400, the tailgate was messed up, and we kinked the hood, for $100, i let another kid get it, the next day he bought it, then the next day he skipped school and took the motor and trans out, he brung the motor to school today in the back of his late 80's ford escort hatchbach, so you can get an ok truck for under $500 if you look, and don't get in a hurry

Re: Project truck price range??????

I've got a 1974 C20 2wd with 91k original miles. Use to have one of them big over head campers on it but i took it off (sitting on side of my house still) has a 350v8 and only has 4k miles on rebuilt transmission...has a cb radio that comes with it (not hooked up) also has some other non needed options like a old time siren, an air horn... has a like new tailgate thats black, doesnt match my paint but it didnt have one because of the camper... the color of the truck is orange and white original paint... has rust on the front fenders and some on the bed. cab corners arent all rotted out *yet* needs body and paint work but the drivetrain is stout, i would drive this thing anywhere... has brand new stock exhaust single not dual... it runs smooth and quiet... took on highway and was quiet all you could hear pretty much was the fan running... has new chrome valve covers and valve cover gaskets... i also replaced the altenator not too long ago... power steering pump leaks a tad but it has a lifetime warrenty so i plan on replacing it... has aftermarket cruise control... also has dual tanks... this is a 3/4 ton... december 2006 tags... NO CRACKS IN THE DASH... the interior is orange paint (original) and black dash (original) suprised how a black dash isnt cracked for being this old .. my grandfather took good care of it and the camper helped shield the sun too... anyways... if you would be interested im located in oklahoma and i could take $1500 for this... thanks (im sure there are a few more details im leaving out so ask any questions needed) OH yeah A/c suppose to work gpa bought a reman ac compressor said just needs charged!!!

Re: Project truck price range??????

I bought my 1976 chevy half ton shorty for $500.00. Drove her home and started the resto process. Orginal 350, 120, 000 miles. The outside was rough but the body was straight. Some rust. It was a true find!!

Re: Project truck price range??????

My dad bought the 86 GMC for $1200 and its was clean except for 1 cab corner which has now rusted back through since it's been sitting since 02. I had seen a 74 short box 4X4 sitting out side a dollar store last weekend. It had a $700 price tag on it. The box was kinda beat up but if I was in the market for a 4x4 I would have nabbed it.

Re: Project truck price range??????

I bought a few over the years, IN NV & Az

I paid: (short beds)
850.00 for a 80 no engine - good body
1500.00 for a 71 running - good body

(Long bed Longhorn)
900.00 for a 72 had for 3wks (no money put in it)
and sold for 1500.00 to a guy that came from Colorado.

So i guess it depends on location and research for what you want.

As long as you don't get in a hurry and be patient, you'll find a good deal eventually. After 8 months of hard looking with NO luck, I found my '85 about 80 miles from my house. It had 6k miles on rebuilt 355, rebuilt m22 tranny and rebuilt 10 bolt w/3.42's, P.O. put brand new brakes(calipers, pads, rotors, drums....everything) all the way around and had receipts for EVERYTHING done to the truck including the rebuild. Body is in great shape, just light surface rust behind the rear quarters, a pea sized hole in passenger door and two bondo bubbles on drivers door. Picked it up for $1500. Keep your eyes open man, something will pop up!!

Being patient is the key. I looked a month for my 76 and two months for my 68. The 68 I drove it home for $250. I stole that one away from the guy.

I'll second that, I looked for a C-10 with an Olds Diesel for a little over 9 months... Glad I didn't give up, this one is in great shape.

Re: Project truck price range??????

It definitely depends on the location where you are. Around here, they are quite common.

Saturday, I bought a running, driving 75 model c10 with a 350 and 350 auto, 340 rato rear for 125 dollars. It was a local city truck, so I'm the second official owner.

It needed tires and a battery, etc.

I pulled the sheetmetal and sold it to the scrapper. I just wanted the frame and driveline to part out.
