Has anyone seen these or using them, I havent seen these before and wondered about maybe doing something like this next year, funds have pretty much had it for this year after all the mods this winter.

I think I saw his and if I remember correctly he is using something like a dead bolt to latch it to the body. I recent saw a utility bed with a tailgate very simular to a stepside tailgate with a real simple latching setup.

I had a StepSide tailgate on a utility bed.Not what you`re talking about,but looked cool!Alot taller than those little utility bed gates.
Are those Mar-K latched gates smooth and flush on the outside?

We make the latched tailgate smooth or embossed bowtie on the outside. Both are flush with the back edge of the bed sides. Installation instruction shows more detail. http://www.mar-k.com/54-87TAILGATEWHANDLEORIGBS.pdf

From their websight they show a bowtie embossed and a smooth unit with this latch setup.

Mine uses Nissan Hardbody hangers and "stealth" latches from CPP or Chevy Duty.

Bowtie67: We offer the link straps by themselves or the complete tailgate assembly including the straps as shown in the picture. The straps by themselves include the pin that bolts to the bedside for a pivot and hardware to attach to the tailgate. The strap folds to hide inside the tailgate end when the tailgate is closed, and supports it level when it is open.

The short answer is yes. We make two sizes of straps, shorter ones for the 41-53 tailgates #C100369, and longer ones for the 54-87 tailgates #C100368. The edge of the gate must be trimmed to allow the straps to fold into the end when it is closed. You can barely see the cut area when the 54-87 tailgate is closed. You may need to reweld the sheet metal to the tailgate end in the trimmed area, as you might cut into the original spot welds. Also, the top pivot is in the notch area of the bedside where the chain latch goes, so you have to weld in a patch there. If you use the shorter straps with the later tailgate, you do not have to weld in the patch because the upper pivot is lower on the bedside. Yes, you will have to trim the tailgate. I tried Putter's idea, but had a hard time getting the metal hangers to fold inside. My tailgate bows out just a bit and it was making it hard to get them to tuck inside. I went back to the junkyard and got a set of the cables from a Nissan Frontier and they work great. I haven't figured a way to keep the tailgate shut yet. Just using a couple of bolts.

I was trying to think of a way to cheap out using cables or something but I think I'm going to buy their tailgate kit when it's time to paint. It will be worth it in time and aggravation saved!

Good thing I needed a new gate anyways...the other day I was thinking I'd get a plain one and paint a bowtie on it, then doh, I noticed everybody makes them with a bowtie embossed on them already, how sweet!

Makes sense.To have a center latch and rods hidden,it would have to have an inner and outer skin.
