centering the wheel - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i've noticed that most of the lowered truck i see have this problem.

the wheel/tire sets back in the opening. right now i have my crossmember out (doing a notch) and when i put it back in i figured i could fix the problem by moving the crossmember forward. i know i will run into steering issues, but i have that covered. my question is does anybody know how far it will need to be moved forward in order for it to be centered.

If you move the crossmember forward, you'll run into problems with the steering linkage. There's a member that modded his control arms to bring the wheel forward, I believe his name is Slammed67. thanks smbrouss70, i saw that mod already, but i have ART Strong Arms and i won't be cutting those up. so i am going to move the crossmember forward instead. and as far as the steering linkage problems, as i mentioned already, i have that figured out. i just need to know how far forward to move the crossmember?

Maybe slammed67 could tell you how far he moved his wheels back if you PM'ed him. I completely missed the part in your first post about you having the steering worked out, sorry. Are you gonna be using a rack & pinion?

no. i'm not going to use r & p, i'm going to do somthing like this.

i sectioned my c-member 2'', so to fix the steering linkage problems i am going to have, i plan on z-ing the frame 2'' as pictured here. and if i make the cuts at an angle it will move the steering linkage both forward and up at the same time.

Just make sure you'll have enough room for your radiator, once the box gets moved up. Good Luck and post progress pics!
