Rear Posi:
I need a posi rearend for my truck I have a 1972 3/4 ton with a 402. I dont know what kind of rear end I have. I need to find out so I can buy the right posi. Also is it possible that this thing came with 4.56 gears? My motor is almost done it is getting a .30 over I have heard of overheating problems anybody else heard of this.

Re: Rear Posi:
Should be a dana 60 if original 402 and 3/4 ton. Thats the typical set up when truck was ordered with a BB and it was 3/4 ton. Your going to have to find a maximum traction posi..those were the originals, or something aftermarket.
Spring and clutch pack style typically. |

Re: Rear Posi:
The stock gear ratio was also 3.54's. The other raitos would have been special order.

Re: Rear Posi:
Not to hijack but did 1/2 ton bb also have a Dana rear? Or was it something else.

Only way to tell after all these years is pull the cover and start counting

I have a friend with a 456 in a 1966 3/4 ton. He has a brand new 350 in there. It runs hot. I've been with him pulling a trailer full of horses into the Wyoming wilderness in the fall and let me tell you, there isn't much left after 50mph in that truck. He put in a new 4-core, aftermarket, super duper radiator. It still ran hot. He put in a couple of thermostats. It still ran hot. He verified he had the right shroud and put in a clutch fan. It still ran hot. It just runs hot. I'm guessing it is the high rpms. To make a really long story short, verify your rear end gears and be prepared to swap them out if they are too low. Most axels have a code stamped on the front of the axel tube. Between the pumpkin and the right brake drum. You can look the code up to get your ratio. Or you could always pull the cover and count teeth.

Re: Rear Posi:
The half tons came with either the 12 bolt, Dana 44 or a Dana 60. I don't know what years they were available. I think the 44 was available in 67,68 and part of 69.
I have a Dana 60/6 bolt that came out of a 1968 GMC suburban w/396. it happens to be a 3.54 posi and the ratio is listed on the glove box door.

Re: Rear Posi:
First, you need to look and see if the cover has 10 or 12 bolts. If it's 10 bolts, it's an HO52 with either 4.56 or 4.10 gears. You can get a set of gears and axles from a 14 bolt, I am told. If it's 12 bolts, it's a Dana and I don't know much about them. Best way to tell the gear ratio is to pull the cover and either find the ratio that is stamped on the ring gear or count the teeth on the ring and pinion. Dividing the numbers will give you the ratio.
