72 Cheyenne Trim
I am working at getting the white center stripe painted on the side of my truck. With no upper holes to go by i have been measure of of the old rotten body panels to try and line up my trim. I got 6 marks on the side of the truck and at the front they don't seem to line up with straight all along the truck. I was wondering if the trim makes a prefectly straight line or does the front piece angle downward slightly?
Also am I besst to use the old bolt one trim clips or the new ones? Thanks

Re: 72 Cheyenne Trim
I`d use the original-style clips.Yes,the spear on the fender angles down a bit and the piece on the bed does, too.I just measured from the top of the marker lense to the bottom of the long bed piece at it`s end and got 3 3/8".On the front from the lense I got 3 1/2" on the right and 3 7/8"- on the left. And,that's on an original truck.I guess the side markers can vary with mounting clips.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Trim
I have noticed that a lot of trucks with trim from the factory actually have (or look like) the trim going down hill on the door, then uphill on the front fender. The last truck I did was not equipped with trim originally, but I did install upper and lower trim on it. The bottom, or course, was easy. Here's what I did for the top: I started with the door piece, since it has the notch for the lock, and put it on level. Then I taped all of the other trim on in line with that piece, using a string to get it all straight. Stepped back to look at it, and it looked like it was high on both ends! This is an optical illusion , and lots of times when you are dealing with straight lines (trim) and curves (fenders), things look wrong if you put them on completely straight. So, I then dropped the ends a small amount until the line was pleasing to the eye. Good luck!

Re: 72 Cheyenne Trim
Here are some pics from the assembly manual that might help.
I don't know how to find where that line marked 30 is at though.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Trim
if you already have the lower trim put the door piece on (because you know it goes where the lock cylinder goes) and measure from that to the lower trim. then all your top pieces should be that far away from your lower trim.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Trim
The line "30" line is loft data line for reference for building the body panels. They used the same type of measuring system of older Lockheed and Boeing aircraft panels.
If you can locate a view of the side of the body or front from the assembly manual with the "0" mark just go 30" straight up from that.... Probably easier than it sounds but it's a start..... Good luck Chad |
