lifter=1, me=0 (pics)

I posted a thread a few days ago about maybe doing a cam swap after I suspected a bit of a lifter problem......the verdict is in, see for yourself. Had one chewed up quite a bit.

Cam, lifters and springs will be here friday.....guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!! At least it's supposed to only be 90 degrees this weekend....down from the 108 we had yesterday and today.

Thats nothing, I had the springs showing on two of my lifters. Good luck on the cam swap.

Yeah, we have a cold front coming in that will knock the highs back down to 98.

If you don't mind me asking, was this a new cam or an old one? I've read recently in Hot Rod about how new motor oils and flat tappets don't mix so I'm curious to know if this was an issue with that.

As someone who's lost 2 cams before I know this sucks. In '92 the motor in my truck munched 2 Comp Cams after I rebuilt it myself. I then pulled it out and had a pro do it (I installed the frost plug behind the cam too deep) and had them put in the only thing I had laying around - 350/327 from Crane. I was going to university at the time and had no budget left. Not only does the motor not pull like it would have with the 268 that it was supposed to have, it only has about 12 lbs oil pressure at hot idle according to the factory guage. And that's running 15W40 diesel oil. Oh well, it's stayed running since '92. Can't wait to scrape together enough dough to do the 400 I have in the barn!

The cam was installed in the motor when the previous owner had it rebuilt. It had about 3 years and 12k miles on it. It was an aftermarket cam, but I don't know the manufacturer or any of the specs on it. I actually haven't pulled the cam yet.....too freaking hot last night and I ran out of dry spots on my shirt. I'll post pics of the cam when I pull it.

those pics are great. I was told that when a lifter or cam lobe went it went fast and failed because the hardened metal where the two contact was very thin. But it looks from your pics that is not necessarily true.

What issues were you having to suspect the worn parts??

It sure did fail fast. The motor was running fine on Friday morning, went and got gas over lunch. When I left the gas station, a very slight tapping noise started. It progressively got worse on my way home and back to work. I had to put about 50 miles on the truck before I could park it that evening, so most of that damage is from driving less than 50 miles, babying it the whole time.

I'm gonna look at the whole thing as a blessing though, I get to put in the cam I want! Plus, I found the rubber fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump was so cracked and damage that just pushing on it a little broke it in two!!! Could have easily caused a fire and cooked my truck.
