short or long water pump?
Is there a way to tell if the heads are correct for a short pump set up. The motor I got with a parts truck has a long pump on it now,but I would prefer it to be a short pump setup to look a little cleaner ,plus I have almost everything needed for a shorty. It does have some tapped holes in the heads close to where the alt bracket would bolt up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Randy

Re: short or long water pump?
The heads were drilled in 69, and remained drilled the same way untill the 90's when the vortec heads came onto the scene, then they deleted a hole. The trucks retained the short pump till the end of 72, and vette's did for some time after that.
basicly, it doesn't matter. If you have old heads with holes, you can go short or long. |

Re: short or long water pump?
RANDY... I BELIEVE THE HEADS ARE ALL THE SAME ON PRE 86 350s AS FAR AS SHORT OR LONG WATER PUMPS GO. THE DIFFERRENCE IS IN THE BRACKETS & PULLYS. THE ONLY HEADS I CAN THINK OF WITHOUT ACCESSORY ARE THE 327 HEADS. JOHN

Re: short or long water pump?
Randy--Andy & John are right on---should be ok. If you run into issues, call me as I have some brackets from both long and short setups. We will make it work out--no biggie. Now if you really wanted cool--serpentine belt setup--hehehehe
