Soon i can play with the big boys
Well...... I took the first step to the 3/4 ton running gear. I'm planning on putting the new 40" good years on my rig, but i figured i better toughin up the drivetrain first. I now own a 14 bolt corporate and another dana 44 but with a 8 lug.
Or as my wife explained to her friend as I was rolling them into the garage "4 tires and a couple of sticks"

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
What gears are they? Looks like there isn't a pinion shaft in the 14FF. I plan on the same, Already have everything except 8 lug outers for the 44. Am planning on running either 35s or 36s I have laying around. I hope the 44 holds up. Post pics of the swap! Can't wait to see.

My 1/2 ton setup is running 4:56 gears and I'm doing 3200 RPM's at 60 mph, this new setup has 4:10 gears and i think it will improve my gas mileage from the 6 1/2 MPG i get now clear up to a hefty 7MPG. The pinion is there it just isn't attached. The only thing i dont like about it is the wheels are 16.5, so I'll prolly have to buy new wheels but i can can use these until i get thing rolling. I'll prolly take all winter making these look pretty, moving spring mounts, making new shock brackets, etc.... but some day i can be kewl and say "I have the 3/4 ton running gear.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
Welcome to the 3/4 ton Blazer club. We are a rare breed. It would be a mistake not to run 4.56 gears though with 40 inch tires. I would definatly not run 4.10 unless you were 36 inch or smaller. Your milage may even suffer from having to work harder to get it up to speed.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
Look on Ebay - you can find used gears all the time - you shouldn't have a hard time finding a set of gears

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
thats a great upgrade.....im planning on using a 9.5 ring gear sf 14 bolt and keep my truck 6 lug. I just dont feel the need to lug around the extra weight of a ff 14 bolt but if your ever planning on doing much offroad it gives you the confidence that your most likely not going to have any rear end problems.unless your running mega power and Big tires. A disk brake swap is simple and pretty cheap.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
If you don't drive interstate alot a 4.88 would be perfect. 4.56 if you do hit the interstate.

You'll love the new beef for sure.
What are you planning on for suspension? Going longer springs? Last edited by vtblazer; 08-25-2006 at 09:53 PM. |

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
the suspension will remain the same I just put new springs (skyjacker 8" softrides) so I'm gonna make the new running gear fit that. The front should bolt right up, especially since im just gonna change the ends and keep my original pumpkin. The rear will have to be moddified for the narrower spring pads.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
I had 4:10's in my '69 with 35's and it was perfect. I was getting in the 6-8 range with that rig. I think your going to see you MPG drop with the 4:10's and the bigger tires. My '72 with the stock tires, engine and 3:07 gears is getting 12-13mpg.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
Well it's official Jim - the Board has spoken - you must go 4.88s or 5.13s! My vote is 4.88 - it's your toy anyway
You can get 5.38s for a 14 bolt now too - but the supplier (Randy's Ring & Pinion) is getting roasted on Pirate4x4.com right now for machining grooves in the pinion bearing support shaft in the 5.38 gear set - the "Pirate" jury is still out on whether this is okay or not.

Re: Soon i can play with the big boys
I took the first step to get me motivated. I sold the wheels and tires. I think it shows alot of class. Not just anybody would let there blazer be seen like this.
