Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

That's interesting, someone else posted the same thing a while back. If the build sheet can't be found (in the seat springs somewhere) look for a date stamp on your frame rails. I don't know how the chevys are but my GMC is stamped on the passenger side between the front and rear cab rubber mounts.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

Any chance that the cab has been swapped? Does the vin plate have regular rivets or 'rose bud' style rivets?

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

Interesting to say the least. Possible that the plants had an excess of 71 cabs when the changes were made? Interested to know the answer myself.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

My 72 one ton has the roof mounted mirror as well. BUT, the vin plate has been removed previously for rocker repair from a collision. I'm confident the cab is correct and the VIN on the door jamb matches the frame VIN. It might very well have been a by plant , by supply / or by mood kind of deal.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

A 72 with the mirror mounted to the cab is easy to explain... we've all seen the mirrors fall off the glass, esp you guys in the south. After it falling down and glueing it on 2 or 3 times, you say screw it... literally, and get an older style mirror. They were avalible as a factory accessory, so the dealers probably had them on there shelf for all the 69 and older trucks that never came with one.

As far as a 71 with no holes in the roof, something else is odd there.
in 71, and ONLY 71, there was a raised pad in the sheet metal where the mirror goes.
That VIN plate shown is of a very late 71. With a serial number that high, I wouldn't be one bit suprised if it was one of the last 71's goin down the line.... with next year's cab.
All you 71 owners with no holes, mounting pad, or evendence of tampering (cab swap, funny rivits) look at your VIN, and look at the sequence number... see if it is real high.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

Didn't the 69-71's have a raised area on the ceiling to mount the mirror? 67-68 were flat just like the 72's.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

woodridge, in 69 the mirror was still an option, not all trucks had it. but no, the panel was flat there in ALL years except 71. I can show you shots on my 2 70's and my 69...

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

Just came from looking at an all original 71 C-70, it was flat where the mirror would go, I know this is kinda apples and oranges since the carry over of C-40 and bigger cabs is more likely but you never know what was done in assembly, one plant may have run out of flat panels before production was over and used some 72 pieces and some plants may have just used up some left over 71 panels. Who knows, that one thing that makes these trucks even more interesting.
Longhorn, thanks for the info, seems like no matter how much you (meaning me) thought you knew, you can just learn some more.

Re: do i have a 71 1/2 ?

71 also has the black stripe around the grille but thats never a sure fire way to tell anything as someone could swap grilles, as for the doors as well too easy to swap them over, but vin numbers don't lie well unless they have been swiped lol

An interior rearview would be an option in all medium duty trucks.
