Headers on lowered truck

Mk, so right now I've got the Hooker Super Comp headers and they sit way too low for a lowered truck. I'm hoping to make the frame lay on the ground and curious what other people with lowered trucks are running for headers to clear the frame yet remain long tube if possible because I like being able to dragrace it w/ straight pipes

Re: Headers on lowered truck

Block hugger headers would work. Look up Patriot Headers.com.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

he wants to stay long.. You might have to get a kit and weld your own together if you want to stay level with the frame.. I have heard that 3/4 chevelle headers work also, but they point down.. You might want to do some searching on the internet and talk to some header makers.. They might be able to help you better..

i'd like to stay with the long tubes rather than a dumptube. I'm debating talking to some people and seeing if I can cut mine apart a bit and make them stay above the frame and keep the super comps.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

Not sure if they would fit your application, but mine are mid length, and
were 4.5 inches higher than the long tubes that I removed, hope that it
helps, pm me if you need part #'s, mine are for a 67-72 4wd application.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

They came on the truck when I bought them, the last time I was looking around under there I thought they went into the collectors back behind the motor which made me think thery were full lenth, shortys hit the collectors along side the motor don't they?

Sounds like you might have the mid length headers. I may end up getting them, but I'm debating seeing if I can find a way 2 cut and bend mine up so that they will sit up in the frame cuz I hate getting rid of these. It just sounds so dang amazing with them on the 350

Re: Headers on lowered truck

To Left Coast,

I am working on a 62 fleetside and am looking to lay frame as well, it has been quite the process with the air bags power steering conversion and whole front crossmember conversion...I looked into headers for the 350 I am running in it(it will soon be installed) and I will be running hedman 68600, I have great luck with them in the past on my chevelles and my 68 camaro...hope this helps...by the way they are intermediate length but they flow great....how are lowering your truck? I am looking for some tips on how to do this thing right the first time...thanks and good luck

Re: Headers on lowered truck

Check this guy out on eBay. He might have what your looking for. I've not used his headers but was considering it. These are stainless but he has others that are ceramic coated.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

I'm going to be running a mid-length Edelbrock on my truck. I have test fit them with the engine still on the frame and they dump out at the top of the frame rail about even with the back of the block. Photos of how they fit are on the thread below:

Re: Headers on lowered truck

I say modify your existing headers if you're otherwise happy with them.
Get yourself a few 180 deg. mandrel bends and go to town!
check out this website too,I learned a lot from it. www.headersbyed.com

I know I'm gona build a setup similar to the dropmember for my c10, so I'm thiknin I'm gonna while I'm there build it so I can make the motor sit way higher, high enough 2 tuck the headers (2 1/2 inches) and then raise the firewall as well since the distributor barely clears anyways. It's gonna be a long summer w/ all this work but I'm excited.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

wow that is an ambitious project!I wonder if you'd have to tunnel the cab floor too?How about driveline angles?
If you do go that route, make sure to post lots of pics for us!

Ya, I'm thinking I may have to mess with the floor a little bit, but that hsouldn't be bad. It is pretty high as it is and it's the two piece driveshaft which helps with raising the transmission as well as lowering the truck so much. It's quite ambitious, but I'm planning on pulling the motor to do body work anyways, so it's just the little extra's such as raising the firewall which will be different.

Re: Headers on lowered truck

....IMHO...why would you want to "lay-frame" in the first place? if something goes wrong with your system..YOUR SCREWED! granted it looks very cool but unless it's a "trailer-queen" I would keep "driveabaility" in mind as for your headers... if you have the time to completely re-fabricate your floors and firewall I would save the time and money and have a pro custom build your headers that way you can be driveing your truck in less than a week rather than however long it would take to fab up a new floor and firewall..just a thought...

I like it low and like the look and the challenge of building it to lay frame, that's howcome I'm doing it. I also don't want it to be a trailer queen because I enjoy driving and believe that if I'm gonna dump a bunch of time into a project, I wnat to enjoy it and that's my way of enjoying it. Driveability is fine if you do good work and don't half ass stuff. I've never had a bag pop and this was my daily driver on bags for 2 years after I got my license. I'm also willing to refab the firewall and the driveshaft tunnel because I have the knowledge and time, but since I'm 19 and going thru college, I don't exactly have the money, nor the want for someone else to do something for me. I'd rather learn, possibly it'll be the hard way, but I'd rather learn to do it myself so then possibly I'll be able to open a shop after college rather than pay someone else to do something which I'd like to learn to do.
Nice lookin frame, really great powdercoating setup and headers.

...very cool great ambition!! I like that "can-do" attitude....keep us posted on your progress,
and what you see under my truck is many hours of clean up wire brushing and sand blasting ...and it's all paint, I don't have that kind of money ether..
