Vent window question

Well I got my doors painted this weekend and was replacing all the rubbers but the vents cause it look like too much trouble to get them out. But....I ended up removing them cause the window was out of the track so I guess I should replace those seals also. How hard of a job is it and can the vent windows be put back on with the doors on the truck? I really want to get the doors on instead of waiting for the seals to come and install them. Any advice would be helpful. TIA.....

Yes the vents can be installed with the doors on the truck. Now putting a new seal kit in the vent window is another thing. If you are just replacing the center felt division bar, that is pretty easy but if you are doing the actual rubber that goes around the wing window glass, that is a pita. You have to drill out rivits to get the window apart. So you will ahve to order the rivit kit also. Hope this helps.

Well at first I was just changing the window channel and the division bar felt. But since I have the vents out I guess it would be a good time to change those seals also. I'm gonna order from GMC Pauls to get the 10% deal so I'll order the seal kit and the repair kit. Just how much of a pita is it? Do the seals come with instructions? Anyplace I could see the step by step?

Im not sure if they come with instructions. I thought about doing mine until reading and looked at mine and said screw it. I think it is mainly a time thing. Hopefully someone hoo actually has went all the way and done it will chime in. I am just going off of all the experiances I have herd about. Sorry cant be more help then that. I dont know if there is an actual faq on this subject or not.

I used standard rivets that hold in the chanel felt etc. The pivot for the window is a different story. I standard rivet WILL work, but it will be loosey-goosey.

As for the rubber seal... it is A PAIN@@!! I did the drivers first, and it works...no whistles/leaks, but its tight and the outer part that lays down onto the door never has sat down perfect. Surprising it doesnt leak there.

The passenger went alot smoother, everything fits good and lays down good, but it whistles sometimes.

I would not choose to ever do it again. Id much rather pay the $$ and get them already assembled and new.

I've done 2 sets and they never quite work or fit right again. If anyone knows where to get new rubber that actually fits please post here. I heard the aftermarket complete assemblys are not perfect either. Please let us know how the gmcpauls rubber fits.

Second that! If your stockers can clean up with some fine steel wool and silicon spray... KEEP THEM! All the aftermarket stuff I've seen is crud compared to the stock rubber, plus, you have to go through all the effort to swap it out (rivets, etc.). If I had it to do over again I would have kept the stock rubber.

I hate to disagree with most on here, but I did mine and without any problems. You do have too have take your time and only take one side apart at a time. That way, you can compare them. Took me about 30 minutes for each side. I didn't used the rivet kit that is talked about. I just used 1/8th stainless rivets. Worked for me. The only hard part was putting them back into the door. To me, that was a "pita".

That was the route I went with. Luckily I had another set laying around for reference as I used the glass from one set into another set. I went with the 1/8" stainless rivets and it all came out great. They whistle a little bit but its a 38year old truck, I expect it to whistle and groan a bit... Just take your time, use plenty of silicone spray to get that rubber over the frame and carefully re-install in your doors. There is nothing that looks nicer than clean black rubber around your windows especially if your getting it repainted. Good luck.

Well then it has to be the rubber used. 30 minutes ? My son and worked on each one about 3 hours going over everything real carefully and they still are not right. I was going to be damn sure these worked nice, but no dice.

Just two cents worth, I haven't done mine yet. If you are going to use silicone spray make absolutely sure you're nowhere near your painting area. Fisheyes suck.
