What rearend would you recommend

I am thinking about changing the rearend from a 10 bolt to 12 bolt in my 82 GMC Stepside, is their any factory posi units in certain trucks or suburbans I should look for

i like em tight kinda small and shapley. but,everybody's different...just kiddin man.trying to lighten it up on here a little bit.depends on what you want if you tow,or want fuel economy?overall tire diameter makes a huge difference.i had an 02 dodge cummins that had i think was a 3.53,i put 35's on it and made a big difference decreasing my towing grunt compared to 31's it came with.

I personally wouldn't swap rearend just to say I have a 12bolt.

As far as finding an old truck with a posi in it, good luck in 2WD form. For chosing a limited slip, for drag I would go with an Eaton Clutch type which is the style that came in most all of the 12bolts.

If you are not going to race it I would stick with the 10 bolt and go with the 3.73 gears. MO

I think the 10's are better axle wise with no taper....I think. Just posi and gear what you got. You really can't hurt either without huge (35" plus) mudders.

going to a 12 bolt invloves careful measuring of driveshaft. it actually should be changed. at min you need to swap to a $25 'switch over' U-joint cause the caps are different sizes. . federated number #372. crossy

what are you doing with the truck? a 9" out of a ford truck will work. you have to re drill the axles and brake drums to the 5 on 5 pattern to keep your wheels

A 9" out of an older lincoln will already be 5 on 5...and have disc brakes too.

I say upgrade your 10 bolt, and add an Eaton posi (pretty much the same as what GM used).

The only issue with using the lincoln disc braker is the pumpkin is offset, so the driveshaft will be on an angle. I know alot of guys using the seville disc brake rear, its a 10 bolt, has the 5 on 5 pattern, the pumpkins centered, and its narrower, so it allows you to run larger meats in the rear
Oh, and on half off day @ the boneyard, its around $75

Eaton, Moroso, factory, pretty much any clutch type....for smoothness. Stay away from the factory "hammer" types.
