Not to z the frame or to z the frame
2 questions? in regard to 87 bagged gmc
A. can one run 2by3 box tubing from control arms back to end of cab and lower cab mounts 4" and rad support the same and be done with. No z necessary. This is only a question being asked because im sure i seen someone on the net saying on there 85 they stockfloored it like this? It was a 85 white chevy shortbox that was on www.mautofied.com for some time and it made its way around the internet in differnet pics. It was from tennesse. If not that way, for me to run 2by4under cab and z it like 3 inches up front while running a 15"tire and rim that should be adequate enuff for me to be able to shave the pinch off and lay rocker. If the truck doesnt lay body from front to back im not gonna bother doing it. As for the back a 6 or 7 " step notch should lay the box out ??????????? Thanks for any replies |

Re: Not to z the frame or to z the frame
The Z is to get the frame down. If you lowered the body mounts you are lowering the body not the frame. Same effect asthetically, but if you high center on something it is your rockers kissing the pavement and not the frame. FYI- the frame is much more resilient.
You can lay crossmember with no Z, but not frame. I dropped my crossmember 1.25 inches, raised my steering 1/2 an inch and Z'd it 3" I've kept the stock steering parts, and the crossmember is off the ground when laying frame by about 1/2 an inch. It lays hard. Oh, and I have 2" drop spindles. Ryan Last edited by Bagd72Chevy; 11-30-2006 at 05:08 PM. |

Re: Not to z the frame or to z the frame
as far as first ? if you are building new frame from a arms back you wont need to z anything cause you are going to be desighning everything from there back and you can put body mounts where ever you like to lay as low as you want
if what your looking to do is lay rocker the easyest way is 3 in z drop spin weld in 3/8 L channel 3" by 3" from top of frame then cut off bottom of frame under cab where new channel was welded on no one ever seid it was simple to lay body and as far as notch its going to depend on the total dim of tire you run on the 15s but i would say 7 or more cause you never know you might want to put bigger wheels on it some day i just had to re notch cause i decided to go bigger
