Spare and Jack
I have a 1966 Chevy Longbed and have not been able to determine where the spare tire and related jacking/wrenching equipment was originally stored on these trucks.
I searched this board, but found no results. Anyone know where the spare and jacking equipment was originally stored? Any photos of the jack and wrench and/or handle? Or was this back in the day when men were men and just had their old lady hop out and lift the truck up in the air while he removed the lugnuts with his teeth? Any information is appreciated. Re: Spare and Jack
Not sure about the spare, although I suspect my grandpa carried his in the bed! The jack and tire tool were mounted under the seat and held in place with a spring. I can't take any pics of under the seat, but could take some of the jack and tool if that will help.

Rotate this pdf pic clockwise one time. Mine is like the one in the top left after you do that.

Re: Spare and Jack
Dad's 64 had the jack, handle and wrench stored under the hood on the right fender. The jack handle went up under the battery tray, iirc. The spare on fleetsides was under the bed, just ahead of the bumper. On stepsides the spare was usually side-mount

Re: Spare and Jack
I see- thanks for the drawing and info-
Much appreciated. I get the feeling the jack and handle will be tough to come across. Thanks- S-D |

Re: Spare and Jack
my 64 short stepside had the spare under the bed until it got in the way of the trailer hitch.

Re: Spare and Jack
Jack stuff:
image of the bottom of the cab, with the seat removed, shows stock jack location with jack. Under the driver seat. this picture was sent to me by someone several years ago. this is a picture of the same type retainer spring, which is seen in the above picture holding the jack in place The jack was a 'bottle type' jack. You can probably find one used. I just bought a hydraulic jack and stuck it in the same place. ---- the under the bed spare tire pictures: Woogeroo photo album at google... click on '1965 chevrolet stepside pickup under the bed spare tire setup' these pictures are from when I was checking out how the part mounts on my truck. I have an issue with the exhaust routing, but I plan to get new exhaust eventually. This gives you a good idea of where the stock under the bed unit goes and how it looks. I've been told that arm there was used for a long time on chevy trucks for under the bed spare tire securing. hope this helps... -W p.s. the only vehicle that is mine in any of those pictures is my old truck... the rest are from car shows or belong to my family.... or I saw them for sale on the side of the road. Re: Spare and Jack
Cool- thanks. I know what to keep an eye out for now.
I appreciate the help. I'll probably spend 3 years looking for that jack, handle and spare bracket although my Dad has probably thrown 20 of them on the scrap iron pile over the last 30 years. Ah well, it will keep me busy and out of trouble. Thanks, S-D |

Re: Spare and Jack
Keep checking the classifieds here for the jack and handle. The 67-72 trucks used the same one. At the stovebolt site there is a guy called RJ from Colorado that has a lot of 60-66 trucks and parts. He will probably have the jack, handle and brackets. I've been guilty of selling some myself in years past.

Re: Spare and Jack
The fleetside trucks had two options for the spare tire mounting location...underbed or in the bed, as shown in the attached photos.
The only location, noted in the factory manuals for the jack, lug wrench and folding jack handle, was under the seat on the driver side. |

Re: Spare and Jack
I think i have one of those jacks floating around in the 66. I really didn't look to see if I had the handle though.

Re: Spare and Jack
Holy Smoke! Stop the presses-- this thread is back from the dead!
I was able to find a jack and handle shortly after my original post back in January 2007. The photos, diagrams and additional info are appreciated- just don't want anyone rummaging through their garage on my behalf as I was able to find a jack a while ago-- Thanks to all for the info- S-D |
