need help!!!! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok i have a 72 chevy c-10 with a 427 ci engine from a 69 impala. Today i went to replace the fuel pump and the fuel pump pushrod but couldnt b/c the pushrod it stuck inside the block it wont move at all. has nebody ever had this happen to an engine and if so how did you get it out. The engine has only about 30,000 miles since it was rebuilt.

Give me some more information - why are you changing the fuel pump, was the motor running and you had a problem? Give me some more syptoms

That sounds bad but I hope not. Could be a different problem than One I seen I guy I raced with. The fuel pump cam lobe gave up and mushroomed the end of the push rod whick could be why you thought the pump was bad in the first place. I hope this is not your problem

the reason i am replaicing the fuel pump is b/c it was leeakin whil the truck was parked on an incline oter then that it was ok. also the were no other signs that the pump was bad and the motor was running perfectly fine.

i am going to be interested to hear this thread..

it may take a little surgery with the cam out..to clear the new cam lobe that's likely worn off, on the old cam..and switch to a electric fuel pump. i am sure the old rod is has major problems as well as the rod bore hole.

you can't grab it with a vise grip and turn it at all?

i cant get to it with vise gris i was thinkn about tryin to drill a hole in the end of it and threading a long bolt in or something to try to pull it out but wanted to see if neone esle had this problem b4 or had any other ideas

Is there some reason you think the rod needs to be replaced along with the pump? In all my years I have never replaced the pump rod. For ease of pump install I do rotate the engine over so the pump rod goes up into the block to make it easier to push the pump in place. Curious if the 427 block has a threaded hole in front to where a longer bolt can be inserted to hold the rod up like is done on the small blocks?

I'd think about bumping the engine a couple of times and see what happens.

I guess the cam end of the rod could be peened and so it won't come out, but that'd be a new one on me. IMHO, I'd just put on the new pump and stop worrying about it.

lol, sounds like the rod is at lift on the cam lobe and he cant compress the arm on the pump to get it installed.

Like others have said, bump the motor over a couple times, see if the rod goes up more.

ive turned the motor over severavl times and that did not help. i am worried about it b/c the rod will not moove at all and on the other big block i have the rod just slide out very easily. also i wouldnt be worried about it but the guy i bought it for showed me reciepts for over 4500 $in machine work on the block so i dont want it to cause a bigger problem in the future. also there is no bolt that i have ever seen holdin it in in the froont of the engine.

So it's not that it won't come out - you can't push it out OR in, and you can't turn it? If you take a dowel and push on it while someone's cranking...does it not move at all?

the problem was not that it wouln't go up, it was that it wouldn't come out right. deos it move in either direction

agree with Billa should be a little over a half inch of movement if the lobe is still there

the push rod should fall right out, there is a majog problem here.
Big blocks don't have the threaded hole up front like small blocks.

Maybe it's peened just enough to not come out easily.If it will not move in or out then it may be bent though I dont think the hole it runs thru is long or tight enough for that.Have you tried a strong magnet to pull it out?Also,if you have a helper or remote starter you might try holding slight pressure against it and bumping it over to see if there's any movement.

Forgive the newb question (it's been a while since I rebuilt a V8 - been doing Toyota I-6s for the past decade...), but is there enough access to weld a nut onto the rod? It sounds like the rod is trash anyway... Perhaps perform the whole operation inside a 4"-long piece of 1" copper pipe so no slag gets into the oil pan? It would give something to grab onto, something to turn, maybe get a slide hammer on it? Sorry, I just can't picture the access off the top of my head.
