I made my own shock extenders... Check em out!

I never got around to putting shocks on the front of my truck because I am lazy and it required some work. Well I finally got around to it today... I had some doestchs layin around from my 3 5 drop that I got form ccp.com They were too short by about .5" so I got thise idea... Here is the crappy prototype I made first to see if it would even work, next to the stock shock mount....

And here is the finished product all mounted and good to go. Worked out perfectly!

What do you think?

Don't want to sound harsh... but it WILL break that way. I would recommend buying a shock that's the correct length. A little more cash up front, but then you can be lazy again, knowing it's done right.

Ehh, the ones I made for my truck are better made and more reinforced. If it breaks, o well. It wont hurt anything. Problem is, there is no shock on the market that fits my specs. I would have to make new mounts for the top or bottom. Ill keep you updated, that is if I ever get to drive this thing again....

Re: I made my own shock extenders... Check em out!

If you can weld, just get a piece of 3" angle & bolt it to the side/top of the frame trimming & notching as required visually. Then cut (or buy thru ART) some shock mounting tabs & weld them to the 3" 'bracket' @ the angle needed so they won't bind.

Stock length shocks @ optimum travel on the cheap. I used a piece of scap steel I had laying around & had them done in a weekends time. My shocks were set up for 12" @ ride height (middle of the shocks compression).

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Where have you looked? 8 comp. and 12 ext. is nothing out of the ordinary. There are a ton of shocks that fit that bill. Look through the monroe dimesnion chart:

http://monroe.com/catalog_lookup/ocl_miscappinfo.asp

I just got some shocks from Doetsch tech. I just looked at their spec chart for ya and their part number M1200GLL is 8.45 and 12.50

ART is supposed to be working on some adapters to raise the upper shock mounting point up.

Yeah ... but it doesn't have the super-duper ART decal. Point deduction.

Me? ART supplied Monroes P/N 33033
14.5" extended
10" compressed

I used these to set my bracket dimensions but they won't ever make it on the truck.

Re: I made my own shock extenders... Check em out!

its just a shock mount, if it does break your out maybe 5 minutes a $.09 bolt, about 3 inches of welding wire and a 1/2 psi of welding gas. I say good work and i hope it works out for you

oh and thanks for the rims

Re: I made my own shock extenders... Check em out!

If that shock mount happens to break while going down the highway, there are a LOT worse things that could happen than what is described in the last post.

Remember, this is a top mount we are talking about here. With the travel the suspension experiences on a lowered vehicle, there is no way to predict what is going to happen when something such as a shock comes loose.

See the close proximity of the brake line? What would happen if the shock got into that line during a loading & unloading cycle of the suspension? Remember that this shock is bolted to the lower A arm ... which is still moving up and down in an arc.

It would rip that brake line completely loose. NOT good. NOT safe.

Please do everyone on the highway a favor and replace that top mount with something that has more structural strength than two grade 5 (at best) bolts welding together.

Re: I made my own shock extenders... Check em out!

Actually, its just shy of 8. Probably more in the range of 7.5. Anyways, I found an rv shock that might work but still may be a little too long. I didnt want to spend the cash to find out. But this is going to work out just fine. honestly, Ive seen worse...

They dont have their truck drop shocks specs on their site. You have to call and they will fax you a copy. If you want to see the one I have, let me know and I will scan it for you.
