Sloppy shifter
Hi all,
I'm beginning the fix up stage of my "new" 1970 Chevy K20 4x4. It has the 4 speed tranny, but I'm not sure what make it is. The gearshift is quite loose when in gear, and its a little hard to find the next gear. I have pulled it out of the housing to look at it and see what I could fix. The little rounded end that slides the gear rails back and forth is fitted really loosely onto the bottom of the shifter, and is held on by a small rollpin. Is there a way to tighten this up? Also, I think I will replace the 2 rollpins in the tranny housing that hold the shifter in place and maybe weld and regroove the places that the rollpins fit into on the shifter. Any thoughts? Check out Pirate4x4.com in the tech section. Down in the 2005 articles there is a how to on fixing sloppy sm465 shifters.
I ran across this the other day and marked it because I will be doing it in the future, when my truck gets going.

Hey Blazerman,
did you do anything to the "snout" at the bottom of the shifter? The ball end on mine is so loose in the snout that I think thats where most of my problem is. Thanks for the info! CT
