5.7 gas -> 5.7 Diesel?
Should be a pretty simple swap to do, just need to find an old, oldsmobile diesel car and take the stuffing out of it. Anyone ever thought of this swap / completed it before?

Re: 5.7 gas -> 5.7 Diesel?
You do know that the olds 350 has a different bolt pattern than the chev 350 right? Do you also know that the olds 350 weighs the same, if not more than a big block? Why not go with 6.2 or a 6.5 if you're going to that trouble? I personally think that up until recently all GM's diesels are junk, but going to the trouble of putting in an olds diesel is beyond me.
PS: I don't know of any engine swap (unless it's a direct bolt in, ie: swapping out a SBC for a SBC) that is "pretty simple". Last edited by Morgsie; 03-18-2007 at 11:59 PM. |

The swap is not a strait forward one. It would work but I would go with a 6.2 or a 6.5 like Morgsie suggested if going to the trouble of a swap. just my .02 RJ22

Re: 5.7 gas -> 5.7 Diesel?
The 5.7 Diesel is just a Olds 350, those diesels aren't very good the Olds hot rod guys buy them for there cranks. Its the same block as the 403 and 455 olds, lighter then a Chevy big block and not much heavier then a 350 chevy. I would have to agree most GM diesels are junk untill they came out with the D-max. If you really want a diesel find a GM chassised bread van with a Cummins 4BT, it will be set up with a Small block Chevy adapter, the autos used behind them where TH475's a beefed up TH 400 the standards where SM465's. THe Cummins 4Bt is a 4 banger but its the 6BT used in the dodges with 2 cylinders cut off, so all the Ve Pumped and P7100 pumped 12valve 6BT aftermarket parts will work on the 4BT. The 4Bt is heavy over 700LBS

the olds 260 and 350 diesels aren't worth the discussion... you'd be lucky to find one that runs... I ain't seen one running in years.

Re: 5.7 gas -> 5.7 Diesel?
The 350 diesel engines were nothing but problems from the start. The heads could never stand up to the 14-15:1 compression needed for a diesel to operate. Thats one of the main reasons you don't see them anymore, that and there was always someone who accidentally would fill up with gas and really screw things up.

Re: 5.7 gas -> 5.7 Diesel?
Actually they were more like 22.5:1 compression. The head gasket problem can mostly be solved buy studding the heads. I've also heard of guys o-ringing the cylinders, which makes the head gasket problem even less.
