Rust in my gas tank?

The other day i was wondering if the gas gauge worked so i took a flash light and shined it down in the tank. There seems to be alot of rust down in the tank and some in the tube. Is this common for a 1970? It really seems like alot down in the bottom. I had a 71 some years back and i dont remember it having any rust in the tank.

Re: Rust in my gas tank?

If the inside of the tank is rusting and the rust particles are moving through the gas line sooner or later other problems will develop. The fuel filter will plug up and fine rust will get into the carb causing the engine to run poorly or stall.

If the rusting continues a hole may develop in the tank.

It is best to either replace the tank or have the tank boiled out and coated inside. Good used tanks are available as well as new ones.
