wiring harness cover, my turn...pics inside
OK, with all this talk about fuse block/wiing harness covers...and seeing some others good looking covers here on the board, I decided to get my overdue envision out of my head and onto my truck.
I am running a 73-87 Painless kit, that bolts to the firewall with a couple 1/4-20 nuts and bolts. I went to the hardware store and purchased longer 1/4-20 bolts, nuts, couplers, and allen head stainless fasteners. The cover is made out of metal, dimensions are 4X4X2.5. I notched the bottom and top for wire exiting. The openings will be lined with rubber, the wires will be covered in loom, and the box will be painted body color. I purposely left the box "floating" off the firewall, as I did not want metal on metal contact and a scratched paintjob. Hope you guys like it, it was very easy to build and makes a big difference IMO.

That looks real good jeff and it will look even better once it's painted to match.

Jeff, what about using some black door edge guard to protect the paint? That way is will look finished, and not rub the paint.

Also, that area of the firewall is not perfectly flat, it angles slightly...if I were to sit it flush with the firewall, then it would look angled too...that would bug me. Anal, I know.

I designed mine the same way, to float above the firewall. I used the e-brake bolts to mount mine since I didn't have those bolts like your painless kit has. -John Last edited by jr2; 04-27-2007 at 12:53 PM. |

Re: wiring harness cover, my turn...pics inside
sweet idea. i like the floating idea with the screw in design. Having it have it own mounting spot make life a lot nicer then having to screw into the fire wall.

It's looks really good, Jeff.
Should blend into the firewall once you get the yellow on it. (Hmmm, the Painless kit looks like it has enough slack in the wire to recess the fuse box into the cab about an inch or even more. Then using a template like yours, build a shallow box. And, top it off using SS button heads.) Good job.

You forced me off my butt to build this. Been thinking about it for a while, but you gave me the kick I needed.

Re: wiring harness cover, my turn...pics inside
It was very easy to install, but like you said, I had a clean slate to work with. I am not so sure I would attempt it on an assembled truck...lots of stuff in the way with lots of stuff to remove in order to install it.
But, if you are doing a body off resto like me...then I wouldn't think twice about it...do it!
