Finally some pics 56 truck
Well folks I'll put up some pics of my 56 build . This poor truck keeps getting put on the back burner for the last 8 or 9 years. Other projects such as more trucks houses etc... Anyway here are some snaps.
Industrial Chassis front end mono leaf rear 79 T/A posi rear with discs. Right now it has a 283. It has had a rebuild stock 350, 400 small block, ZZ4, built 355. All these motors went into other projects that I thought were more important. AC, power 1 piece glass. All work done by me in my garage. Here goes... |

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
Thanks everyone. I haven't worked on it since last summer when I did the paint. I've got everything to complete except tires and exhaust and seat upholstery. And maybe interior panels. Bed is the only thing I haven't really looked at. Needs a new rear cross brace. Have new front panel. But after seeing what the rest of this truck was like, I'd be better off buying new than putting the money and labor into it. I'm sick of stripper and sand blasting.

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
The colors for the truck are VW colors. That orange you see on Beetle convertibles only with a gray under coat to make it pop more. The interior is also VW harvest beige with the clear flattened to look like leather.

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
Right now I just need to get it put together and running. If I keep it, bigger small block, fuel injection, overdrive (have a 200 4r that needs rebuilding) maybe 4 link. It already has heat/ac, power rp steering, 4w discs, power windows, rear tank etc...
I may also change out the front end to a clip or that subframe from RB's. But I'm going to drive this Dakota based one first. I'm just not happy with the way it sits. Nothing against Industrial Chassis. This was my very first install and I may have not done it "exactly" right. Sits wheels too far back I think. Steve[/QUOTE] Steve, when you say you are not happy with the IC front end, why do you think you have it in the wrong location, did it not center off of the old spindel C/Line? Did you trim any coils off the spring? Do you know if anyone makes 2 or 3" droped spindles for these Dakotas. I am in the build process of completing my chassis with one of IC Dakota crossmembers. When I was fitting the crossmember I don't think you could get it in the wrong position but this was on a 53 not a TF chassis so I dont know if there is a difference., From your photos it looks like all of the weight is on the front end, but it does look like it could stand to be a bit lower

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
did it not center off of the old spindel C/Line?
Well I thought it did but the wheels set too far back. With the boxing already attached to the cross member it can only go in one way, or so I thought. By my rough measurements after the fact the wheel base is short by 21/2". I did cut out 2 coils. the lower A arms are now level with the pavement. It is sitting on 215/75 temp roll around wheels so that maybe the reason for the tall look. There are 2" drop spindles available. I saw them at Summit Racing. I had pics of the full install but the hard drive took a dump awhile back and corrupted a lot of my pics. Steve |

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
On the AD kit do have to cut a "wedge" into the frame like on the 55-59? That is why I can't move the cross member in case someone is thinking Along those lines.

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
Cut a wedge ?
I am not sure what you mean by that. Your right the crossmember is welded to the boxing plate and you would have to make some major adjustments to mount it anywhere else. The C/L of the kit fell in the same location as the solid axle C/L, I will measure the wheelbase tonite. I do not have the sheet metal removed form the donor truck yet so I am not sure how it will all look! You have me concerned. I am going to start with 1 coil and see where it ends up. Steve has made many of these crossmembers I am sure he would have the jig perfected by now, one hopes!!

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
After the crossmember is in on the task force trucks you have to cut a trapezoid out of the frame to fit the spring pocket in. It is approx. 3" across the top and 8" across the bottom, hence I'm not able to move the crossmember.
I would almost swear that I DID put it on correctly but it's been at least 8 yrs since I did it and the memory can get very selective. Steve |

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
Well I guess that is beacuse of the width of TF frame, as the AD is a bit narrower.
As you can see the spring towers on the AD fit on the outside of the frame. Boy I dont know if I could even remember what project I was working on 8 years ago not to mention the front or rear end!!!!!!!! Finish your project and drive it like you stole it, and get your money back in sh1ts and grins!!

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
Have you talked to Steve at Industrial Chassis, and sent him this photo of your truck to see what he says?

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
No I haven't spoken to Steve since complaining about the nosebleed ride height. That's been probably 2yrs. at least. I didn't notice the front wheel location until late last summer after paint and assembly. I think the color made it more noticeable. Didn't seem to stand out when it was in primer.

Re: Finally some pics 56 truck
If your referring to the ride height issue, sort of. I tried TRW springs he recommended but they were exactly the same as the Dakota. Since the Dakota's top coils stacked together and not adding to the spring rate I cut those off per his suggestion.
Again I want to emphasize that this was my first build and I may have made some mistakes. Plus it was so long a go I don't fully remember all the details. I need to find the time to crawl back under and take some more measurements. Other people have used this system with no problem. I was just too green too trusting to check things more thoroughly. The Heidts system I put into my old '47 panel went in perfectly. If I was to build another, I would go MMII or a derivative like No Limits. Steve Last edited by orgalmeister; 06-28-2007 at 07:22 PM. Wow this is looking fantastic! What are you workin on now? I like the flat color you chose for the interior, nice touch.
