Up tight exhaust heats the floor, worry?

I have my exhaust installed through the cross member, its about 3" from the cab floor. My flowmasters are hung behind the cab a few inches in front of the rear-end. I drove down the block recently and in five minutes the cab floor was too hot to keep your hand it. You wouldn't notice with shoes on, but my wife came along and was bare-footed [that's how I keep her, lol] anyway I am thinking it would be smart to wrap the pipes in exhaust wrap fabric to keep the floor cooler. Plus I plan to mount my two amps under the seat, and they won't like sitting on a hot floor.

So has anyone had to wrap the exhaust to control the heat?

I would build an exhaxust heat shield. Make a sheet-metal shield that mounts off the exhaust between it and the floor. The greater surface area of the shield, the better it will disipate the heat.

At least get your wife some socks!

Re: Up tight exhaust heats the floor, worry?

the heat sheild idea is a good one tho i'd think more of using aluminum//a friend built a car with a 800+hp nascar cup engine and the exhaust was alot closer than 3" to the floor and he used stuff these guys provided. it worked good with no heatissues www.thermotec.com

Re: Up tight exhaust heats the floor, worry?

I'm surprised you're having heat issues with 3" of clearance between the floor & pipes. My 3" duals tuck up a lot higher than that and my floor stays cool. I agree that a heat shield would be your best bet, you could make your own out of aluminum sheet metal pretty easily.

Re: Up tight exhaust heats the floor, worry?

My interior guy told me about a ceramic coating that is applied on the inside cab on the floor and firewall. We are going to do it on mine when I get there. He said the guy that tested took two pieces of metal, one with and without the coating. He put ice cubes on the metal and hit the underside with heat. The one started melting instantly, and the other did not. Sounds like some good stuff.

Re: Up tight exhaust heats the floor, worry?

Thanks for the suggestions, I think a heat shield is a great idea. I do have Second Skin Damplifier on the cab floor so there is some insulation, but its very surprising how hot it got... The truck idled about 5 minutes before I drove it so maybe it heat sinked while not moving, and it has been high 90s even up here in the mountain sticks.
