17 in flex fan and 10in pusher fan
73 C20 with 454,
previous owner installed a 17 in flex fan. It didn't seem to keep vehicle cool enough in stop and go traffic. So I added a 10 inch electric pusher fan that comes on at 185 measure at top left backside of radiator. Pusher fan is located on front top left side of radiator. You'd be better off just ditching the flex fan and put a clutch fan & shroud back on IMO.

By the looks in the pic that fan is way tooo small for the shroud, a bigger fan that sits half way in and out of the shroud would work

I didn't think the fan looked correct. I also didn't get how it is pulling enough air through mounted as is.
Thanks for the info. I think they just match the size to the old fan. I may try and find a good stick fan to put back onto truck. |

I agree on both accounts, you need to put a clutch fan back on there that is the right size.
Will what you have hurt it, no, but it ain't the best setup.

Ihave a flex fan as well as a pusher fan in front . only use pusher when sitting , idling etc with manual switch. tried every thing to cure my over heating problem electric fan , puller & pusher etc. what Ifound out is that the shroud is everything . had one homemade out of sheet metal , fan blades fit 1/2 way in outer edge of shroud , never over 180 on the hottest days , even idling.
just curious, why are there suggestions you go back to a clutch fan . Ihave been warned they the rivets can come loose & bad things happen. ? |

The pusher fan is not a bad idea in some cases, but in yours it maybe just hindering your airflow that much more. I agree with the others, your flex fan appears to be way to small for the opening and it is hard to tell if you have it situated in the shroud opening properly. The fan blades need to be centered in the opening to ensure that there is no recirc of air back through the opening. That is the biggest killer in this install.
Ditch the flex fan and get back to either the clutch type fan or get a better radiator and put on an electric fan setup that is a pull type of fan. look for one that is made to cool an engine of your size and Horsepower. Last edited by piecesparts; 08-21-2007 at 11:08 PM. |

Ditch the flex fan, it will help to get a stock type fan in there.
Ditching the flex fan will also ensure your arm, head, hood, radiator, etc. stay in one piece.

Thanks to all, found a stock fan. Installed it tonight. Will let you know what happens the next time I take it out in traffic.
Going to keep the pusher fan installed for now.

Cooling problem solved.
Was in bumper to bumper traffic for over 45 minutes and gauge never went above the middle mark. While driving needle stays below middle mark. stock Clutch fan is much better than flex fan.
