New engine running bad
I just got done putting a stock 350 crate motor in my truck and I started it up. It is reving really high and the oil pressure gauge goes thru the roof. The only upgrade it has is the HEI distributor. I am wondering what I can do to stop the engine from reving so high. I don't have a tach yet so I don't know what the RPMs are at. It is almost like I have my foot on the gas and I am trying to pass somebody on the freeway. Any ideas??

Re: New engine running bad
Is it a new carb as well? If so, double check the idle speed adjustment. Also check the timing- too much advance will boost up the rev's. Check throttle linkage to make sure it's not hung up somewhere.

Re: New engine running bad
I backed the idle speed screw off.....nothing happened. Linkage isn't stuck...guess timing is next.

Re: New engine running bad
Is carb new or off your old motor? Also check your fast idle screw.

Re: New engine running bad
Just wanted everyone to know that I found the problem this weekened. I was missing the sping that holds the throttle forward on the right hand side, so when I stepped on the gas the throttle would not return to the closed position like it should. Thanks for all the support and knowledge. It is running good for now.
