1986 suburban tbi conversion
I am converting a carburated burban to a tbi. I have most the parts to run it. My question is, does a 1987 or 1988 suburban have or require a smog pump? any help would be nice, even pics if possible.

Re: 1986 suburban tbi conversion
Depends on your location and also if it's a 1/2 ton(1500) or a 3/4 ton (2500)
My 1990 suburban is a V2500 (1987 -1991 R=2wd V=4wd) has no smog pump as opposed to my friends 1989 V1500 model does. If you're in California, I'd be willing to bet that it would require one regardless of the rating. |

Re: 1986 suburban tbi conversion
Thanks for the response. My burban is 1/2 ton and I do live in california, so my best bet is that it will require one. I am just wondering if it is the same set up as a 86 one.

Re: 1986 suburban tbi conversion
Try to find a donor vehicle in a wrecking yard that has all the set up you will need for your vehicle (1987 to 1989) and either buy the parts from them that you need or if you don't think they're servicible parts then hit your local parts store or dealership to get the parts you need. You may need to get checked over by your referee station before you can pass an emissions test to get an ok. research everything ask questions and gather all parts needed before diving in and tackling the project to save yourself headaches during the swap out/upgrade.
Good Luck Have fun & happy wrenching!!!! Dave |
