61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

Well with all sorts of life things goin on, havnt been doing much truck stuff again... BUT I did stumble across this while filling up with gas while we were moving... I have never seen anything like this before. Looks like a 61 chev but instead of the two pair of full size doors I have seen on some 67-72 crewcabs, these doors are actually cut down a bit and are narrower compared to the fronts... Looks as though this is set up for someones project, and if so this would be one unique ride in my book...IM thinkin 348/409 sm420, Rockwell T-221, and one ton running gear... enjoy the pics....

Wow, that one could be saved. Its always sad to see someones hard work go to waste.

A guy here in town built an extended cab 64-66 with a 455 Olds motor in it.

Yep, good find, they built them like that, GM subcontracted the work out to a couple of specific coach companies. There is a 63' just down the road from my house, and I have seen a few at the shows, but very rare. That one looks really clean, someone ought to grab it!

Do you know if they might be interested in selling that bad boy? Would be awesome to have a truck like that.

I heard the railroad somewhere out west purchased 5 of those things.
Rumor is there are about 25 built.

Re: 61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

My idea for this would be a crewcab dually with cutdown stepside fenders attached to a fleetside bed. I think it would be bad a__ to the extreme! Here is a link with some more I found awhile back. Jerry

Re: 61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

Tell us more about it! Are you getting it, is it for sale, all the normal questions need to be answered! That thing is way, way cool, and would make a great project. If I wasn't so covered up, I'd find a way to put it behind my shop.

Re: 61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

There were actually quite a few crew cabs built in all makes even back in the 40's. Mostly were for logging, power and utility companies and so forth. There used to be a company in Decatur Texas where I lived and they built extended cabs Chevy's for sale to Walker Chevrolet back in the late 70's and early 80's. They looked as good as factory. I have not seen one of those in years.

I think most of the older 4 doors just got crushed as not many people were into trucks like they are now. I have seen a few for sale and some sitting up in Oklahoma. I've seen a few restored ones for sale at fair prices.

I like the way that one is done. The ones with the 4 full doors always looked a little silly to me.

Re: 61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

Yeah that one needs to be saved!! It is almost assured that it is an old railroad truck or a utility company. Before GM did the crew cabs in house they used several different companies to build crew cabs, with varying degrees of quality and success.

This one is just begging for a 409/ 4l80E auto dropped on some 20's..... mix a little nostalgia with some modern improvements.....

Ahh if I only had more money......

The only thing on this version I don't care for is the exposed hinges on the back doors. Other than that these are killer looking trucks !!!!!!!

Re: 61 Crewcab... HOLY COW!!!!

Man, I really do want that truck...I showed it to my son, and he thought it was pretty cool. In my head, I've built a 1-ton panel crew cab...and thought I'd cut the rear doors down exactly like that.

Anyone notice the original paint in the door jambs is army green? Army green, with Generic Utility Company Orange over it...maybe it was a military truck and then sold to a utility company.
