Opinions Needed...and a pic
I posted a question about my rear end before but can decide what the best solution for my problem is.
I Have a 327 w/ a 3 speed AT and 4.11's. The issue is I do a lot of freeway driving and this setup isn't working for me. I've looked for a 3rd member with milder gears to swap and can't find one. I also called around to rebuild my 3rd member and I have been told its hard to find the proper gears for a stock 1962 housing, is that true? Another option I am thinking about is putting in a 4 speed AT w/ OD so I can still have my lowend torque and be able to cruise on the freeway. What would you do if you want the best setup for a cruiser but are on a limited budget? Also what do you think it should cost for the different options if I remove/install the parts but have a shop rebuild the gears or find a used tranny? Thanks, Alex And heres a pic... |

I'm gonna sound like an idiot, but whats the HAMB? Oh and don't laugh about a rear end swap, what ratio do you have?

H.A.M.B....Hokey Ass Message Board, its a old timers hot rod forum. www.jalopyjournal.com/forum thats the link to it. The guys on there are kinda brutal unless your sporting a 30's highboy or some type of Boyd/Foose rod. BUT their classifieds are always full of really good parts and cars for sale.
Im not sure on what rear I have but I know for sure its not 4.11!! Its a half-ton so Im thinking 3.33? |

Re: Opinions Needed...and a pic
A good 700r4 would be your easiest solution. I'm not sure, but I don't think ring and pinion gears for a 62 rearend are too available... The later 12 bolts are more common. With little modifications you can use a 72 rearend. 3.08 gears with aTh350 is a good highway setup.
Beautiful truck by the way!

Re: Opinions Needed...and a pic
When I had my '68, it had 4:11's and a 3 speed AT. I put a 700R4 in and cruise RPM's were just under 2200. The only thing I didn't like about a 700R4 is first gear is 3.06. With the 4:11, it would smoke the tires really easy in first and you were not in first very long. I want to do a 200R4 in my '64 since first gear is about the same as a TH-350.
Other idea is find a different rear end at the junk yard that has lower gears. My .02 worth. |

Re: Opinions Needed...and a pic
Why not swap the whole rear end out for something more suitable, like a 3:50, or 3:73?

Re: Opinions Needed...and a pic
I'm running 3.73's with a th350 and a GearVendor Overdrive. It's perfect. I like the GearVendor because I still have the quick shifting of the 350 and still have an overdrive. I wish the 700's would shift a little quicker and firmer. Maybe there's a way...

I have a 454 / 400 auto in mine with a 72 308 rear end and it cruises all day long with no problems.

Re: Opinions Needed...and a pic
You may want to try DTS. Thats www.drivetrainspecialists.com
I just ordered a new 3.08 eaton posi and ring and pinion along with a rebuild kit. They told me it would work in a 65, I'm not sure about a 62. |
