I-6 gas mileage
Just out of curiosity, what kind of gas mileage do our trucks get with an inline 6 instead of a V8?
I know if I keep my foot out of my 350 on my Rustride, I get around 15. My drive is mostly freeway, though.

Re: I-6 gas mileage
I don't have personal truck experience, but my 72 Nova got about the same as my truck. I've heard folks post that they don't get much better out of the I6 engines.

Re: I-6 gas mileage
Well, poop! I was hoping to have a great excuse (gas mileage) to score a truck with an inline 6.

Well -- if its an excuse you need for yourself-- think about how cool they are with dual Mikuni's on an Offy intake with a set of Clifford headers and that great big finned Offy valve cover. If you need an excuse for the wife -- start it off with flowers and a decent meal out on the town (or a movie - my wife loves to go to movies, but i hate to go, so anytime i take her, i can do no wrong for at least 8-10 hours) The big 6's got mediocre gas mileage because they usually were teamed up with deep gear ratios (4:11, sometimes 4:56) and the 3 speed or granny 4 speed trannys make it sing a song of desperation at anything over 75 -- and they are most comfortable cruising at 55 If you can drive like a PawPaw, then you might squeee 15 or 16 out of one |

Re: I-6 gas mileage
my dad always got 18 to 22 mpg with his straight six trucks....but he drives like a old man,,always has, but he can sure pull the miles out of a beater....i would love to have a straight six for the mpg..but i know i would hot rod it, so i might as well get a big block....

a vintage inline 6 probably has about the same performance level as a 305 or a smog era 350 though. I looked at 73-87.com at some of the old magazine scans -- the 0-60 times of these old trucks were horrible unless they had a big block - we've really come a long way |

Re: I-6 gas mileage
All my past Novas with sixes had either the 230 or 250, so they would do pretty good on gas.......18-20mpg.
But my truck's another story. The 292 was getting 10-11mpg. before the tranny swap. I haven't driven it enough yet with the O/D tranny to calculate my gas mileage, but I'm hoping to improve it to 14 mpg.
