new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

hi, I posted this in the welcome section and they adviced me to post here. I bought my 64 c10 yesterday and I want to put a big block in it, but I have some questions, like

1. how much does it weigh?
2. will a big block fit in the engine bay with no modifications?
3. does anyone by any chance have any info on the f/r weight ratio?
4. how big of a tire can fit in the back with no tub or mini tub.

I have a 468 thats almost built and Im trying to decide whether to put in this, or in my Nova.

thanks.

From everything i've heard depending on the truck you can fit a big block in with no mods at all. Sometimes on some trucks you have to cut the fire wall to make room for the distro. Suprizingly the weight of these trucks is around 3-4000 lbs if i recall correctly. I'm running 265/60/R15's out back on mine with no problem. I know there are guys on here who are running 20's that easily fit. Some of them will probably chime in. Btw welcome from Sunny New Mexico.

thank you fercho71 and stepside 65!!!

It has 275s on there right now, but thats car size. my nova had 295s at one point. I would like to be able to go 335 but I doubt it will fit. I might just need to go ahead and do a mini tub.

making room for the distributor? is that after the mounts were moved to the forward location??? thanks

tubbing is deffinatly ganna have to happen if you want a 335 in there, for more tire clearance, cut the bump stop mount out and put a universal bump stop on that mounts on the underside of the frame

The V8 slots? My '65 had the original 283 / powerglide when I bought it many moons ago and the perches were in the rear set of holes in the frame. In fact, the 350 / TH350 that's in there now is still in the rear holes - I never moved them. Just FYI.

Same here, my v8 was on the back mounts and dis. fit with enough clearance.
I did end up moving it to the front mounts when i changed to a th400 because of the drive shaft being a tad too long.

Re: new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

I considered this same swap....BB into a 64. You can do it 3 ways.

1. Use your SB mounts as harry63 did. Sets engine up a little higher.

2. Use mounts from a 67-72 BB truck. Frame is slightly wider on the 67-72 frame........see pics elsewhere.

3. Use mount perches from a 73- 87. You will need to notch the frame where the perch goes similar to the 67-72 trucks. Engine mount goes on frame and engine gets "cup" type mtal piece on the engine.

Re: new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

Harry 63 has it in the rear position..........you can see the extra bolt holein fornt of the perch on top of the frame. I have my engine in the front position(SB)......ton of room around the distributor. You could lose an entire intake manifold back there!!.. It appears as though many people here do not move up the engine. I also do not have a stock radiator set-up so I do not know about front clearance issues.......I use long water pump however.

good luck

Re: new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

Im dropping a 454 into my truck, you can use the SB mounts and perches but, you will have to move them to the front holes so the dizzzy clears firewall. Next step is running a set of swept style shorty headers, ones that dump at the starter and oil filter. Guys on here that have run full legnth headers have opted to notch frame rails and or run custom mount perches and stuff. Lastly and the most minor of the swap is purchasing a universal throttle linkage kit ($12). Hopefully (fingers crossed) I will have a swap thread going in a week or so. Just need to get my headers, fuel pump and line/filter then Im good to go!!
Seems like you might be looking for a drag project, if so I would suggest using the Nova...dont get me wrong a C10 would be badass but in the long run $$$ wise you will save with the nova on getting traction, fabrication and everything else dialed in.

thanks for the heads up. it seems like it will be more of a challenge than me or my friends thought. if you could link me to some headers that would work I would greatly appreciate it. I looked on summit and they did not have any for the big block for that year.

its actually not being built as a drag truck. I just like hot street cars is all. i would like to be able to hang with a mustang gt at least. ultimately, a mid 12 sec car would be nice and not too hard on drive train parts.

could you go into a little more detail on what mods you are having to make to make your 454 fit? im onboard with the shortystyle headers but I dont want it to get more involved than that.

maybe ill just build the 327 coming out of the nova into a high rpm screamer for this. shoot, i dunno. I just want a fast and reliable engine.

I totally feel you on the hassle free swap. Thats what had me really hesitant on doing it as well. Seeing how most guys did theirs on here was out of my league, no time nor tools for the fabrication. I finally tracked down a buddy who has done 3 bbc swaps into 63-66 C10's and its all as simple as how I explained in the previous post.....

Here are the headers Im going with, they sweep back towards the firewall and dump at the oil filter and starter. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Just use the front perch mount position and you will be fine with clearance of distributor to firewall and also have about 2 inch clearance of fan to radiator using a long water pump.

Re: new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

THANK YOU nf6g, fchava, and greg64. Im glad those seats can go in the truck especially as summit has them with the cover for $59.wow.

I added the swept shorties to my summit wishlist, and thanks for the weight info greg.

my friend seems to think it would still be better to leave the nova complete and put the 468 in the truck yay.

I have remembered a few more questions

1. What kind of radiator do I need for this truck? Im not trying to spend $500 on a radiator, so any cheap one that will fit and keep a 468 cool is fine by me.

2. do I need a new crossmember to use a th350???

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HELP SO FAR!!!

oh, these are the parts I have for the 468 so far-

Im thinking I'll send the oil pan and headers back and get some that will fit the truck. Im contemplating if I want to use a smaller cam for more torque( darn I need to check what gears I have)

A Fat Motor is going to produce enough torque for a fun street project with just about any cam you choose. The powerband and the duration/lift on the Lunati cam you have should make an excellent daily driver type cam, imho.

Re: new member with 64 c10 and questions!!!

Welcome from BC, Canada! Looks like a nice project. This site http://www.6066gmcguy.org/GMCID1.htm has weights for the GMC models at the bottom. For a SWB with inline 6, the weights are 1925 front, 985 rear and
2910 total. But with the big V6, the front weight increases to 2355, so I suspect a big block will be similar (about 800# for the motor).
