Has anyone used spray paint for vinyl on their seats
I have a blue vinyl bench seat and was thinking of using the black spray paint for vinyl on it. Anybody tried it? How does it turn out. Also, they sell a gloss black and a flat black, any one have pics of how their seats turned out?

Re: Has anyone used spray paint for vinyl on their seats
the stuff in a rattlecan is junk you need to spray with DuPont vinyl dye. about 50$ A quart. this stuff soaks into the vinyl used a quart just on this half top,you can pretty much get any color you want. if you dont have access to a paint gun or a compressor i would suggest taking seats to a upholstery shop. i wouldnt even think about painting cloth that is just nonsense. and vinyl has to be clean soap water, wax and grease remover.
then spray the paint. SEM is probably the only rattle can i would think about spraying. i have pics posted on another site that i will try to find showing the process in painting. Last edited by AuggieStyle; 01-22-2008 at 07:26 AM. |

Re: Has anyone used spray paint for vinyl on their seats
several years ago i had a caprice 1979 year model. it originally had a tan color cloth seats/ i went to a junk yard and bought front and back seats that were vinyl gray in color. including the steer column. i cleaned and sprayed all the parts listed above with a vinyl based paint i bought from a paint shop. i drove the vehical about 2 years before i sold it. at that point the paint stayed and never flaked off. at that time i weighed approx 350 lbs and drove it daily. and it still never flaked. dont ask me the name brand of the paint, because i cant remember. that has been about 10 to 15 years ago.
i said that to say this, it can be done. the cleaning is the most important part. use alot of alcohol to clean the vinyl and dont be scared to use alot of it!!

Re: Has anyone used spray paint for vinyl on their seats
You can use SEM brand spray cans or buy any automotive quality vinyl paint. The key to making this work is proper preparation. You MUST make sure everything is clean. I suggest you use mixtures of water with Sudsy Ammonia to clean them first, then rinse with clean water. Clean, rinse and repeat.
Once you are sure everything is VERY clean and dry, use the manufacturers recommended vinyl prep. This step is important as well because it opens the pores of the vinyl and allows the dye to penetrate.

Bumper to Bumper can get it or may have it. Or an independent NAPA should be able to get it also.
