Does a 71 have a vin plate on the dash?

I went to register my 71 c-10 and the lady doing the vin check wouldnt do it cause i dont have the tag on my dash. Its on my door jam. She refused to accept it, even though its clearly a gm plate. I dont even know if it came with a plate on the dash.

Most cars had them inside the door, so either she's 12 years old, or awfully new to her job. You need to go back and find good old veteran of the job and they should hook you right up.

tell her you need to speak to someone else who knows older cars, and if she looks at you funny, tell her you wanna see her boss.
The one in the door jamb is the only (legal) one on there.
I'd have ended up being a smart @ss and pointing out that there is NO HOLES in the dash... you know like, "show me where it was" kinda thing.

I would take it even further than just her boss...because now you have been inconvenieced because of her ignorance and lack of training. I would take it as far up the ladder as you could. Im an ass that way!!!!

Sort of the same subject but a little diffrent. In Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas. I love pulling up to stations in my '64 Buick and asking them to fill it up. They will walk around for a little while and usually come back and ask where is the gas tank? (Under the plate)

People that work with/around cars should know at least a little about them.

Don't get me started about the people in the parts houses.

Starting in 73 Vin tags were put on the dash. And yes definately take this issue up the ladder, dont EVER FORGET these people are Public Servants they get paid by your tax dollars therefore they answer to us WE THE PEOPLE!

Not to get off topic, but did 71c20 just say in Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas? What do they do at the convenience stores at 2:00am when you need petrol? I've never heard of that.

Back on topic, I had the problem w/ my '72, and my g/f had that problem with her '68. And this was being done by people that were old enough to have been living life when these trucks were new... We get used to today's things, and forget about the past!
Anyway, good luck with it, and when you go back, don't leave until you get thru the management chain to someone that will listen!

You guys do know old cars and trucks are getting to be pretty scarce out there on the road? Take a look around you next time you are out driving around.

The folks that knew the answers for all the "older" cars and trucks cant work forever. New younger folks come in and do what they can. Its 2008, lets say a person is 25. The cars and trucks alot of us like were old when they were born.

I get my title and registration stuff done by a small private place. I don't have to go to the DMV. That might be different in other states. I try to go in when they aren't swamped and I get excellent personal service. Maybe Washington state guys should try this route.

I'm in the copier/printer business. Have been for 30 years. Sometimes we get calls on the older stuff. That means I have to take care of it cause the younger guys are clueless about them.

Its the way of the world. Waving the American flag and saying I'm a tax payer isn't going to make it any better.

sorta related...when i called my lovely insurance company to get insurance on my 71, they asked for the vin. gave them the vin and the girl was like uhh thats not enough numbers...then after convincing her of that she asked for make and model. Told her 1971 chevy c10 pickup- she was clueless. had to speak with a manager to get anything taken care of. people have no clue anymore about things. good luck!!

Wow. It must be the DMV thing that sparked all the negativity.

C'mon guys. You can't HATE on the woman at the DMV because she didn't know more about a 71 truck than the owner. If the OP had known that there was no dash tag, he could have educated her, but even he wasn't sure. (neither was I three weeks ago when I picked up my "new" 71 GMC).

Lets hate on the DMV in general and cut the worker who was clearly misinformed a little slack. Now, who wants to talk about taxes????!!!?

In response to the gas station at 2:00 in the morning thing... they have 24 hour attendants that take car of the filling up. Although if you pull up in something sweet like a '50 custom convertable studebaker, or a '67 427 vette, they usually wont say a word about you pumping gas.

I have my filler tube inside my bed and it never fails- when I pull up, they always look around the bed before simply inserting the cc and starting the transaction. I point to where the filler tube is and the one's who have pumped waaaaaaaaay too much gas still have a hard time seeing it until I get them up close to show them. Needless to say, I always get to pump my own gas if I want to- this goes especially when I pull up in my Camaro.

This reminds me of my local DMV. Small town, so they are rotated from a larger town nearby (I guess whoever pisses off the boss has to drive over here).

Anyway, I have learned which ones are morons, and which ones can get the job done. Unfortunately, most fall into the fist category. If I walk in and there are only morons, I come back later.

Bad news is that the most competent and smartest (and meanest) one that I'd always wait for went to work for the post office and now I have to fight with the morons at the DMV!

It's been said on here in Oregon if the vehicle is 73 or olderr you can pump your own fuel.

She is a little slow in the VIN tag department. She needs to get on the program and learn what the rest of the world knows. Especially if she is going to be doing this work. This is what your tax dollar is doing for you. You work and make the money and those that can't work true labor are working at the offices like the DMV. My mother-n-law worked at the Treaurer's office in a small community and handled things like vehicle tags, she had the background to be smarter than what you dealt with.
