700r4 lock-up question
Hey Guys,
I bought a lock-up kit for my 700r4 from Southern Rods & Parts off of eBay this week. For the most part the installation instructions are pretty straight forward, but I do have a question, and of course they have no Tec support today, so I thought maybe one of you could help me out. The pressure switch that comes with the kit is to be installed in the 4th gear pressure port on the passenger side of the tranny right behind the 4th gear servo. Now some models don't have this port (of course mine would be one of these) and the instructions call for drilling and tapping the servo cover, and installing the pressure switch there. Drilling and tapping the cover is no problem, but I would like to remove it do so. It just doesn't make sense to me to drill it on the tranny and have chips being pushed inside the tranny. I don't know how to take this cover off. Can someone give me a little help with this? Thanks, Tim |

im not sure how that cover comes off, but i know that the cover is aluminum. if you drill slow all the metal your drilling should be pulled out by the drill bit.

doesnt that servo cover have a snap ring on it ??? i seem to remember that for some reason.

im looking at a picture of one on the web. it looks like its got a snap ring holding it in. it should come out with a pick or pocket screwdriver.

look at the picture of the housing. looks like a groove for a ring. they also sell a kit with the servo and it shows a snap ring in the pic. |

My case does have those two notches like the pic. I'm guessing that's where you'd go in with a screwdriver to pry it out. I wonder if adding one of those new servos would be a good thing to do? If you haven't already guessed this is my first 700r4 tranny.

I like hooking up a switch that I control. I can lock up 3rd gear going up mountain roads. Makes for a nice climb. We do have lots of mountains here.

Hey 62 short step,
I was going by what the directions they sent me said. As you can see in the pics here that I've posted I don't have quite the same set-up as you. I wish to hell I did, but like most things I do, they're never easy. If you still have your instructions see if they don't say "1. Remove pipe plug from 4th gear pressure port. If your 700r4 does not have a 4th gear pressure tap, you can drill & tap the servo cover." Needless to say I'm confused. Oh by the way, what is the hose I'm holding in the last pic? Vacuum ? Tim |

Well that sucks!! I see what you mean. I would try to take the cover off then, I wish I knew how I would tell you. The hose is a pressure bleed off, like on axles. There is no vaccum on the 700r4, that I'm aware of.

It looks like from the pics you can get a flat tip or needle nose pliers and take out the c- clip thats holding it in. Post this in the dravetrain section. Those guys know what they are doing!! Good luck man!!

I am getting ready to do the same thing my trans doesdn't have the pressure port but I will be installing a sonnax servo while I'm in there. The hose is a vent take that long black extension off you don't need it and the cover comes off with a snap ring but its a pain in the ... you could put some grease on the bit and drill slow and then when you tap use grease.

Okay Guys,
Here's the scoop. I just got off the phone with a Tec guy down at Southern Rods, and he said the cover has to come off. Held on by snap ring. Drill and tap it right in the center. He said they were pretty easy to take off (heard that before) I guess I'll be finding out. I'll post some pics once I get it off. Tim |

If I remember correctly, you press in on the cover to gain access to the retainer, I think I had to use a large pry par for leverage (it was in the truck when I did this). There is a large retainer ring, (like a circlip that is used for the piston pin in small 2 stroke engines) which you can take out using a pair of small screwdrivers. Once that is out the cover should just pull out. You will probably need a new o-ring as well to get a good seal when it is reassembled. Good luck!

Just took an extra one I had and drilled today and I would recomend taking some off the lip around where you drill the hole. I took off about half of the lip and the swith fits right in flush. Now I just have to take off the real trans install my servo and re install cover and wire.
