header + exhaust options for a 250 I6?

although i wouldn't mind a bigger, badder, faster more rumbling power plant, my engine runs like a top and i operate on "if it's not broke don't fix it". ...besides i'm never really in a hurry to get anywhere anyway.

i'd rather dump $$$$ into other areas of my budget build project. (paint and body, drop, interior etc)

i'm pleased with my current 250 but would like to update the exhuast system on it.

i'm looking for a more aggressive rumble. i'd like to run headers: dynomax black jacks or pace setters to cats and flowmaster 44s with tips out either side in the factory location. is this a do-able combination? or should i just run 2 into 1 pipe into one cat and one muffler out the factory location?

anyone running either of these combinations or something similar?

any alternate recomendations for a new exhaust system front to back with this power plant?

i've got an 82.




summit has headers for my application so i'm hoping they'll work. after a little more research i decided to just run it single pipe after the headers.

i eventually need exhaust front to back anyway, but i'm going to get get spindles and a flip kit first. i'm thinking i'll use the economic stimulus us govt cash for the headers, pipes and muffler. that'll definitely save the country from recession.

my 250 runs so smooth and torquey i love it. as far as power parts, i know there's elaborate, expensive carbs for these engines but other than that i haven't a clue. i'd like some bolt on HP too.

Same here, But some one mentioned that some place did make a head for the intergated head.
Other then that, not really much ya can do.

I just got an 81 GMC short wide with a 250 inliner. Mine runs pretty well. I'm broke too, and I'd like to get to know more about this motor too and focus what meager funds I do have to other areas like rocker rust and and a simple bolt-on drop. I'm also new to the full size scene, so is there anything you guys could tell me more about my truck? Is there an internet source to decode my VIN? Any help would be cool.

yea....slash crashley...your whole 2 into one thing is the dumbest thing ive heard in a while....straigt six...one pipe, unless u go ONE into TWO, also...HEADER, not headerS...remember it aint a v6/v8...header aint worth it, chop out the muff and give it a glasspack, maybe punch out the cat and it will sound MEAN

Dude the 6cyl HEADERS are split and have 2 collectors. So the "2 into 1 thing" makes perfect sense. If you have to have a cat, then get a high flow from magnaflow or others. use what ever muffler you want. I have used DynoMax's welded race muffler on an inliner and LOVED the sound. Me myself,cant stand the sound of glasspacks.reminds me of an old clapped out Ford. Good luck. I always like it whe someone plays with the SIXes.

A buddy of mine built a very nice 235 for his 1967 SWB using many parts from Clifford... Their exhausts were very nice and he had an old Doug Herbert cam that provided lots of bottom end and sounded nearly like a V8...

Hope you can insert your foot in your mouth cause if he ever gets a header for it... its split so it IS true dual.. BTW Cliford performance is who you need to get ahold of... And as far as the integrated head...hit the junk yard.. The older ones...I think 74 and older but I can't remember dont have the integrated head..

Stick to your V8's. Sorry we have 6's and they work. I get about 18 to 22mpg and I not in any hurry to get to the next stop light. My truck is for work and so is the 6 in it. Put a header on it. Could suck like small block ones do. Leaky Little...
I own a 235 in my 53 chev and have 250 non-inter head in my 78. I owned just as many v8s as I have 6's. All my 6's where and are bullet proof.
My 235 has a stock manifold cut into two pieces and welded to plug them up where the cuts where. Then for the last two exhaust ports (the new second piece) drill for another flange to be welded. Bam, Dual exhaust manifold. The important part is the heat exchange between the intake and exhaust manifolds, which this provides. And is a cheap way of doing it.
My 78 Needs some kind of dual exhaust option in it also. I was at my buddy's junk yard he pulled a dual exhaust manifold for a integrall head motor. He thought it would fit mine. It supposly came off a nova, late 70's check for that also.
If I was you I would get rid of the integral head. Its a mess. Just get a exhaust manifold and intake off a early or later 250. I think the integral was introduced in the trucks in 80 or 81. In the cars in 76.

spudz is right, 74 and older have the non integrated head on wich the intake and exhaust manifolds are seperate, any thing newer has an integrated head on wich I understand the manifolds are built together. I have a 73 with seperate manifolds wich makes it easier to put on headers for but am pretty sure that both types are available. and the header splits to two outlets. bob
