teeth on flywheel
How can I make sure that my flywheel teeth count are matching up with my starter. When I changed the block from 283 to the 350 I used the old flywheel because it mated up to my powerglide. However, I cant seem to find a starter that doesnt have issues with mating up to my flywheel. I might get one start before I have to start messing with shims and then it still doesnt work!!!!
This mess gets 5of5 flaming heads of frustration!

Hi Vic,
How many teeth does your ring gear have, 153 or 168? If it's 153, you're looking for a starter where the mounting bolts are directly across from each other (perpendicular to the crankshaft). If it's 168, you need a starter where the bolts are staggered. Then you start using shims until you get it right.

The 283 flywheel will not work on a 350. You need to get the bigger 168-tooth flywheel. It will still bolt up to the Powerglide.

well i used the flywheel from my old 283 and it started up fine. until i replaced the starter. Now with my new starter it doesnt work. when i matched up the 350 flywheel i purchased to the powerglide the holes didnt match up.
This relates to my question. Might I already had a 350 flywheel / starter? I bought a 283 starter thinking that its what I had that worked. But it doesnt. So im trying to see if i cant get a tooth count and make sure I get the correct starter. Im guessing there is no easy way of counting them huh! |

The 283's and 327's have starters that have their mounting bolts straight across from eachother. The later 350 starters have staggered bolts. Which does yours have?
