well that blows. :(
Huge apalling bummer.
The starter fragged on me last night... had to leave the poor girl pretty much in the ghetto for the night. The starter started making noises yesterday morning, figured I had at least another day out of it. Oh well, time to price a mini starter. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 04-25-2008 at 12:53 AM. |

Re: well that blows. :(
I guess it coulda been worse though. Yesterday when I got home from work, I had an upper rad hose in my hand for the longhorn, and it actually fit (3rd try). So when I got home from the ghetto, I had to hurry up and clamp the hose on and fill the rad. So at least I had a ride to work today.
The tow truck driver was geekin over the burb. First thing he said when he got outta the tow truck; "Where the H*** did this come from, I KNOW it ain't from Ohio!" |

Re: well that blows. :(
The biggest problem, to me, is the fact that a F@$% towed it home.
I would have found a starter for it, and layed on my back(w/ my dog laying there), in the middle of the night, and changed it, before leaving it behind.

Re: well that blows. :(
I ran mine through auto bell a few months ago,i was so proud of her,she ran great all week. When she got to the end,she would not start! it took 3 of us to push her out of the bay. One of the wires came loose on the starter, after checking everything i could think of,i just happened to see the wire hanging there. I have never been so pissed. One young dude said to his friend, thats a sweet ride,to bad it wont run,he will never know how close he came to being jacked up at the auto bell car wash.

Re: well that blows. :(
gmsee, pushing wouldn't have done anything, it's a TH400 tranny.
Huck, I know you're just messin... but I was pickin my mom up from her work, she doesn't drive... and the world is a MUCH safer place. 72lo... that wasn't an option. At 11 in the evening, you aren't getting a starter... not around here anyways. And I had to be up fairly early for work. Friz... I haven't even looked, are small block and big block starters the same? (402/TH400) Dave... to be honest, I haven't even looked yet. I KNOW the little wire is hooked up, if anything, it would be the large cable. But, with the noise and slow cranking it was doing as of yesterday morning... I am 99% sure... (familiar last words) |

Andy, I have a couple used mini starters laying around from my drag racing days, the only problem is I have no clue how good they work.I bought them as spares and never needed them. ...Mike

Re: well that blows. :(
To think I could have bought a suburban from the university here about 20 years ago. They had an auction sale and had several of them. I heard they went fairly cheap.
Those mini starters sure look good... but $160?? I've had a rebuilt original type in my truck for 15 years and still cranks. I think I paid $30 for it. |

Re: well that blows. :(
longhair... maybe I shoulda said semi-ghetto. It sat in the CVS parking lot at clime rd and Demorest... a block from franklin heights (where I graduated). The area I was concerned with are those apartments just down the street back from the UDF on the corner.
CG... LOFL!!!! I'll bet you would! Down South, I think I'll pass on those... unless you have a deal I just can't pass up. I HATE doing R&R on a starter... and hate even more when I have to pay for them twice (or more) so I'm wanting something with a waranty. gmsee... go price starters now... you'll be lucky to get one rebuilt that cheap. NAPA's cheap and crappy ones start at 50 bucks, and they only last a year or so. (NEVER buy NAPA starters, they are what junk craps out after eating too much) cstjr... yeah, the wilson road exit... that's not far from my stompin grounds. 5 miles maybe. Yeah, i live on the west side. It ain't the best, but it could be MUCH worse. For the rest of you who are not familiar with the town here, the west side is the blue collar side with a lot of crummy areas thrown in to give it a bad rep. It isn't all that bad. |

Re: well that blows. :(
Have you thought about a Camaro/Corvette LT1 starter? It's a OEM version of the high torque starter.

You recently bought that, about 6 months ago. What kind of warranty came with it?I`d take it back to where you bought it to get it fixed.

Re: well that blows. :(
Yeah, nearly ghetto. The place where it was is ok, but down the hill is definately not the place to be.....could have been worse though. That complex is fairly surrounded by OK neighborhoods. BUt, if it was in an area like the bottoms, you would have gotten it out that night.
If something like that happens again and you need help/rescue call me. I can help with bigger "planned" stuff to, if you need it. 110v portable MIG etc. |

The ghetto in Columbus looks like Beverly Hills compared to East Los Angeles.
