Rear end noise
Hey Guys,
I've got a whining noise coming (I think) from my rear end. Mainly when making a big sweeping right turn like gettin off the highway. It has oil in it. Any ideas? If I need to replace something in it would it be easier to buy the entire thing? What would work in my 63? Lot of questions I know, but I know no better place to ask them. Thanks, Tim |

I'm assuming 12 bolt and 1/2 ton truck. Others may have more specific diagnostic ideas.

Re: Rear end noise
Jack it up on jack stands and run the truck in gear at idle. Then you can roll around underneath the truck and listen at each bearing location with a stethoscope to see what condition each bearing is in. If you don't have a mechanics stethescope, just use a screw driver held up to your ear. The vibrations travel thru the screwdriver and you can hear a bad bearing this way and know for sure what is bad before you tear anything apart. A bad bearing will be noticeably louder and rougher than the others. Oh and make sure your using good jack stands and not the cheap ones.

Re: Rear end noise
I would hope it's the pinion bearing, and not the gears themselves.....Thats a little cheaper to fix.....still a pain in the butt though....
Does it happen just turning right? Take the left axle out and check/replace the bearing...... Also a pain, but cheaper than a rear end.. And what HotRodYJ said.....use good jack stands....... That should be fairly easy to figure out... good luck.

Re: Rear end noise
Besides the bearings I had a broken washer behind one of the spider gears. You'd have to pull the c-clips and axles to check these.
