Cleaning/adjusting while intake is off...

Finally have all the parts to complete my intake/carb/valve cover swap... should be doin' it on the 8th-9th.

While I have the valve covers and intake off are there any adjusments, tuning, or cleaning I should do or be prepared to do? I am mainly thinking in terms of the vavle train, but I might be over looking something....

Motor: Bone stock 283 in my 62 chevy.
Stock intake manifold - Holley duel plane
Stock 2bbl carb - Holley 4160 4bbl
Stock covers - new covers with breather/pcv provisions

Thanks All!
-Matt

Flip the intake upside-down while it is off the engine. If it has one of those tin plate covers over the center carb-warming section. remove the cover and clean all the carbon out of there. Holley intakes might not have this feature.
The stock GM intakes on v8 engines are famous for carbon buildup in this spot.

Pull the pushrods/lifters and change out the cam, mabey ??

That would give you some "tuning" !!

That would definatly give me some "tuning"!
That'll have to be down the road unfortunatly... I have been collecting parts for this since the beginning of the year, and finally have all the parts to finish plus some free time to do it! 1.5 days should be enough to finish this up and maybe have some time left over to finish the headlight switch/relay thing I started!

Just wipe up any residual goop, maybe double check the oil pressure sender fitting for tightness... there's not much to do really. Remember to mark the position of your distributor so you can put it back and not screw up your timing.

I would in fact do some wiping up before you take off the intake!

I have a decent pressure washer... what protection needs to be done to blast the engine bay with everything in it?

Simply take the front end and cab off of the frame, which should protect the firewall and inner fenders from harm, spray the engine, a voila! Clean engine. Very very simple and should take about as long as it would to wrap your alternator with a plastic bag.

Nice! I sure dropped some serious dough on the paint for my firewall. Fading primer on the body, uber custom on the firewall. I have always thought that it is more important to be beautiful on the inside...
