Another rear mount gas tank question

I have been trying to decide on what gas tank to use in the rear of my 64 chevy step swb. I saw montey's swap with a mustang tank and really like it. But I haven't found and info confirming that it will work on a 60-66. I have found a couple short posts saying that the frame has to be widened and a couple that say it does not. Does anyone have anymore info on this tank swap?

The shape of the Mustang tank looks nice, would mount up wth the flange real tight. Wouldn't hang down too low, but it look like it is too wide to fit between the frame rails. I pulled out my tank behind the seat and plan to relocate it in back as well. Today I'll put a tape measure on it to see if the Mustang tank would fit.

The space between the frame rails on my 66 are about 27.5". The Mustang tanks are 29" plus the flange to end up 32 5/8" wide. Looks like the frame would need to be cut back. The rear brace would need to be moved back as well.

I think the sending units on the Mustang tanks are not the same ohm range to work with the Chevy gauge, so that would need to be worked out. It would be nice if the stock sending unit could be made to work in the Ford tank.

Does not look like a simple drop in swap, but could be made to work with a little luck. I'm about to win a Blazer tank on ebay, so I'll live with the depth of the Blazer tank.

There is a 19 gallon tank that fits between the frame at the rear. It is made by Classic Performance Parts just for old chevy pickups. Worth looking at if you havent made up your mind. I installed one in my 66 swb stepside. Easy install and you can keep your original gauge.
