Bad turn signal switch problem
I have a bad turn signal switch in my 86 C20. It works fine to signal a right turn but not left. It doesn't blink like the right but will light up if the stalk is held down. Would that cause the left rear tail light to not have a brake light or turn signal? It has running lights and all the other lights works but that one.

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
Is the stalk "clicking" to the left like it does on the right?

No it doesn't click to the left. It used to blink when held down. Now it doesn't blink when held down. It has gotten progressively worse. I just wondering if that would have any effect on the brake light.

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
Mine has been that way for several years. I have replaced the switch and lever, rerouted the wiring, and I still can't figure out why it does it. I have asked about it on here, and no one had any suggestions. I would appreciate it if you would share any info if you figure it out.
Mine won't click into place but will flash if I push it down REALLY hard. It passes inspection that way. Both times I took the column apart it was much better for a couple of days, and then was right back to where I started. I don't really want to pull the column apart a third time. It is a real pain in the butt. I'm about to buy a rebuilt column just to make it go away. Slonaker |

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
This from what I have encountered is either weak/rusted springs in the cam or a broken/worn cam. It shouldnt hurt the brake lights unless there is a short in the wireing somewhere. Are you having problems with the brake lights?

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
Yes all my light functions are working. Except for drivers side rear brake light and not lighting up to signal a turn. The front turn signal bulb will light up but nothing happens with the rear. I just recently noticed that the left turn signal wouldn't work. Thought that it was in the steering column and no big deal I would just flash it myself. Then I noticed I didn't have drivers side rear brake light. I changed the bulb and that didn't make any difference. I check all the other bulbs making sure they had a good connection.
I have another turn signal cam I'm going to hook into the wiring harness. Maybe that will fix it. My reasoning with the brake lights and the turn signal cam. Is that when the turn signal cam wiring harness isn't plugged in there aren't any brake lights. CNC do you have anymore pics of the ford tractor in your avatar? I had a blast on mine as a kid. |

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
I cant see why the cam would affect the brake light, you may have a short in the wireing or maybe even a bad tail light housing. that would explain why the front is not blinking. also check your grounds may have one that is loose or broken, also the wireing connection at the bed.
As far as the tractor...no that was taken at a car show/tractor pull they had that set up for the kids to have a pull off. My son was 2 1/2 so we put him in the three year old event and he won...I was a proud dad that day...lol

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
I tried hooking up the new turn signal cam. It works just like the old on did. I guess I get to trace wires, looks like someone wired in a trailer wiring kit.
By bad tail light housing do you mean the lamp socket? Im thinking so just want to make sure. |

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
I would look at the plastic piece in the steering column and see if it is bad (White plastic piece that is held down with three screws). Then make sure that you have all of the bulbs working. If there is a lack of load for the blinker, then it will not click or blink. Sometimes the ground is bad in the lights and that is your problem.

Re: Bad turn signal switch problem
Well he switched out the cam (white plastic thing in the colum) and checked his bulbs and is still haveing the trouble that is why i am leaning toward either a bad tail light socket or bad wireing.
You can check the wireing and socket with a test light
