Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

With the economy the way it is, gas prices, etc etc, I just can't keep the chevy.

I'm getting 11mpg right now in my truck, and I've got it leaned out pretty far to help with gas mileage.

Also, I'm out of a job, and the several job interviews I've been to have asked me what I drive, and when I tell them, they almost immediately end the interview. People think because it's 28 years old that it won't be reliable. Nevermind the 8 grand I've put into the drivetrain the the last two years.

So with that said, it has to go.

When it does get sold, I'm buying the car below. It's a 2000 Crown Vic, P71 police interceptor. Ex cop car. Buying it from my buddy, he said he'd hold it till I sold my truck. It's got about 95k on it, but it's solid. Even with the 4.6, my buddy was getting 17-18mpg in the city with easy driving. It's just something I can get in and drive, it has more room, it's comfortable and quiet, it's just all around a better option. I know it's a F*rd, and I'll always be die hard chevy, but I've ALWAYS wanted one of these.

I see a code 3 push bar and a CB radio to fake people out in the near future

That sounds like a step in the wrong direction.

If you want mileage, keep the truck and buy a damn geo prism. Hell, I'd sport a moped before I got rid of my truck!

Re: Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

just makes me wanna
there are plenty of Chevy options that get better mileage, how about EFI on your truck?
I have a 1995 Suburban with TBI and get 17-18 mpg.
everything i have heard about the crown vics has been less than flattering
and technically, you are breaking the forum rules by advertising your truck is for sale here

Re: Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

17-18 is nothing....centsless has a 1995 Impala SS with the LT1 that will walk circles around the Crown Vic (many of our deputy friends miss the 9C1 Impala when put into a Vic with the 4.6L) and it gets about 25mpg without even trying....highway is upwards of 28mpg.....it doesn't do 17-18 unless you're in the throttle like crazy....

It stinks that you need to get rid of the truck, but sometimes life gets in the way of our hobby....and if the Vic is what you want, go for it......

Ford has a problem with spark plugs BLOWING out of the holes. Check it out for yourself. Ford WILL NOT stand behind it. But if that is the car you want, then by all means get it.

Re: Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

I sold my 87 GMC, and got a GEO Metro. If I applied for a job, and the interview ended 'cause of what I drive, I would count myself lucky I didn't get hired.

At least someone here agrees with my theory!

manimal, I did the research, and that is so much more common on the 5.4 liter engines than it is on the 4.6 liters. Either way, there's a pretty sensible fix for it now.

The heck with that, let the kids ride the nut-crushers and get a cruiser! I've got a four gallon tank and get 50 mpg when I stay out of it. Plus, you get to view the scenery like never before. Not enjoy the green blur you see from sport bikes. There's a reason why most of the bike wrecks you see involve kids on sportbikes.

As far as the job hunting goes, it would have been the other way around for me. The minute they even mentioned my PERSONAL vehicle, I would have told them that unless a company vehicle is provided, the interview is over.

Just the fact that they expect you to have something NEW to rack up tons of miles on is unacceptable.

No that's the thing. These aren't even jobs that require me to drive. Some are office jobs, etc. The thing is, they feel that a 28 year old truck won't be reliable enough to get me to work and back every day. And right now, I can't afford to just be walking out of interviews. I've been out of a job for almost three months now, and I'm doing everything I can to find one.

at a meeting I attended this morning a body shop owner said he had some type of moped that he's selling now that gets 100 mpg.. and runs 45mph.

Certainly an option in todays economy.

Re: Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

well crown vics are pretty cool. at bondurant we drove them with 5 speeds and track suspensions, super cool car

that said i'd rather get a big body impala, the look cooler imo and are cheaper

as for crotch rockets getting in wrecks it is all to do with the rider, cruisers are in the worst riding position ever, sitting square on your ass with no weight on your feet? horrible, it just so happens that only old people who ride slow ride cruisers.

Re: Well guys, my 73-87 days are coming to an end

well if the job doesnt require it why not tell them you have a brand new civic or something its not like its required for work... but anyway i dont think youre going to get better mileage out of the crown vic.. one of my buddys on the ford site for my ranger had a crown vic for his get around car and he says he does better with an F250 diesel than with the crown vic.. the crown vic does have a nice ride tho... dont get caught playin cop tho... they kinda frown on that

Xtreme80, say it ain't so! My '78 gets 10 mpg on a good day, so I use my '92 Caprice Classic for my daily driver. It's an ex-CHP patrol car and routinely gets 20-22 mpg. Plus, with the dual spotlights, black paint job, and front push bar, everyone gets out of my way on the freeway.

Yea if they asked me what i drove i would have to tell them, well if i am to work on time and reliable what does it matter what i drive.. that would give me a bad attitude about that place if they wouldnt hire me for what i drove. maybe its just not the job for you ya know.
You are in your own shoes though no one else can tell you whats best for you, you know.? I had to sell my 83 SWB, i really hated too but it payed two of my pain in the arse bills i had off. I kick myself now for it but i did what i had to do at the time. So good luck with whatever you decide
