Auxiliary Leaf Springs

Does anyone have a truck that came with the auxiliary leaf spring on the coil spring rear end? I have a C-20 and wondered if this is something I should look at installing for a better ride. On what trucks were these auxiliary leafs a stock item. Does anyone have a picture of their truck with these? Many Thanks-

They will not affect your ride at all untill you are loaded down real heavy.
I'm not sure when they were stared, but I know of a '69 GMC longbed 1/2 ton that had them.

you wouldnt notice the helper springs at all unless you are hauling something heavy

Well I have a set of them on my 68 Chev and I agree it does not help untill you are loaded down with a heavy load.. Here is one thing that does have me confused, my truck has the option for auxilary springs on my truck but the pics that I have seen from LMC Truck are one that bolt to the back of frame and then when the truck is loaded down the Auxilary spring are on top of the Rear End Axle Tube, however, the one on mine are actually bolted before the Rear Wheel Wells and when the bed is overloaded, the springs are on the Trailing Arm!! I know my Glove Box Door is original because the Vin Number in the door and on the Glovebox Door Match completely and some of the option numbers are Faded but you can read them ! Were there 2 different Auxilary Springs ??

i wanna see pics of that also, that sounds way wrong, could be dealer ones, factory ones are G60 on the glovebox list and bolt in the rear and arch down to contact round rubber bumper installed on a plate that sits between trailing arm and axle just like the lower shock mount plates do.

they are worth 500lbs extra on each side and the gvw on the vin plate wil reflect this by saying 5500 gvw, im unsure why they didnt post 6000 on them with G60 but they just didnt.,,all but one 68 i have ever had, including 1 tons have had G60 factory aux springs. is a very common item, probably didnt cost much.

I remember parting out an upside-down 72 deluxe (wasn't enough left to tell if it was a GMC or Chevy) with an Eaton on trailing arms, and it had quarter-elliptic auxilliaries on both sides of the axle. The front ones were clamped onto the frame with hunks of oak inside the frame section to keep from squashing the frame rail. The more common aux springs were in the back, bolted to the frame with forty-leven bolts.

I have the exact same setup on my '69 C-20. Look for G50 (coil springs) and G60 (aux. springs) on your options sticker. That will tell you if its factory, or your truck was pieced together from other trucks...

The only way to improve the ride is invest in some shocks, and make sure your coils and trailing arms are in good shape. Like everyone said those aux. springs aren't even used until you reach the max load of the coils.

The top arrow indicates the direction of the aux. spring. That first circled area is the bottom of the aux. spring. The second circle is the rubber pad that Fast68Chevy mentioned. You can see the direction of movoement...

My 67 C-10 came with the factory overloads and HD coil springs all around. They don't have any effect until the truck's really loaded down. I noticed that when its that heavy the overloads seemed to help stabilize the truck and make it drive better as well as help support the heavy load.

Yep....Ill try to get some pics for you tomorrow. Mine is '69 1/2 Ton Longbed Chevy. If Im not mistaken...I think it is on my glove box RPO list too...?

Yep...better to search first for your question and see if anyone answered it already....

LMC has everything except the axle pads...never seen them anywhere else either.

my 69 has them in the back but there is a 69 or 70 down at the yard i'm gonna bring home for the cab and clip that has them mounted in front of the axel as well . i never seen them on another truck

I noticed that LMC sells the rubber bumper but not the axle pad. I am sure other vendors have the bumpers and maybe even the pads.

My 66 long step has them on the frame behind the axle. Looks factory but the option sticker is long gone.

The LMC catalog does not show as available the bracket that bolts to the frame and holds the auxilliary spring.

I think mine had them.It is a 67. I took them off because they seem to rattle and thump when i hit a bump. They just push on a teflon on top of the axle tube. With no weight on the box they were only an inch from the axle. I'll see if I have a pic.If I find one I will post it.

well if your running a 3/4 ton and you want a better ride run a 235/85/16 inch radial tire run air shocks and it will be some what smooth i have a 1965 3/4 ton and i put my 16 inch radial tires on I bought the Motor home tires 10 ply radials and Love them to death last me for 5 years at a time I run them Hijackers rear air shocks but i hual up to 2 1/2 tons every other day and you might want to get a Rear Sway Bar that will help a little in the turns

Hey there, I know this is a really old post, but I was curious if You've ever got that picture you wanted, from what I could gather most of the responses where geared toward and auxiliary spring (G60) that goes above the rear leaf spring. If I am not mistaken, You have a trailing arm system, and if You are still interested in the rear auxiliary leaf spring for that, say the word and I will send you a picture...I am looking to buy a new one myself.

my 70 c-10has them, all factory installed. there no god till you need the extra support from hauling heavy. I like em even though I,ve never needed them !!!!!!!!
